My great uncle was a AAA battery commander in the Irish army during WW2 although Ireland was neutral there were some air raids Allegedly mistakes made by Luftwaffe bomber crews, anyway my uncles battery shot down a German bomber. His crew were decorated for the achievement my dad had a great picture of my uncle and his crew next to there Bofors 40 mm gun, Also he Inherited the medals he was awarded. when his uncle passed they had absolutely no monetary value but my dad was very honoured being A Ex Irish soldier him self. He decided to donate them to a museum along with the picture. Do any of you guys have any War memorabilia and a story that goes with it I would like to see pic's of it and read the story. Of how they were acquired.

The story of Ireland during WW2 has always been a fascinating one for me especially the fact that some of the POW camps in Ireland had both British and German pilots. There's a good documentary about that I will see if I can find it. Basically the POW's could visit the local towns/villages the allies in the morning the Germans in the afternoon so long as they gave There word as officers they would return the same day, As far as I can remember only one used this privilege to escape a US Captain stole a boat and made his way back to England. But was sent back because he gave his word as a officer Some of the German pilots stayed after the war and married Irish women.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. I had no idea about the visitation privileges.

My father's uncle captured a WW2 pilot that had bailed out of his aircraft and landed in a field near Coldingham, reputed to be the first captured Luftwaffe pilot in Scotland, while waiting at my uncles house for the authorities to pick him up the pilot gave my father's uncle his wings, I have them now. Pic please! Not that I doubt you in any way but I would love to see what it looks like now.

Edit: It will be around 4th November when I next have to venture forth back to the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond

One of my father's uncles had a Japanese sword he picked up over there, and I have a memory of him showing it to us at the dinner table at his house when we were visiting him in NJ. I only remember it vaguely, it was maybe the early 90s when he died and his wife shortly thereafter. I honestly don't even remember his name anymore. The Jedi Master

I have some war memorabilia that I picked up along the way. Flag, hat, bayonet, cleaning kit, patches, etc.

Mixed bag of nationalities in the family, so mixed bag of souvenirs. WWI German helmet (with the pointy end) brought back by French great uncle, and spent shells he engraved to kill time, if not ze Germans. I have one shell with me in Hong Kong, will post a pic tomorrow. Helmet pic a little later this month. Shell pics. Does anyone know what is it exactly ? He was a grape producer, explaining the engravings of some sorts of vines. A German uncle has a fantastic collection of photographs he took while serving in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front in WW2. All bad memories to him, so very reluctant to share. Will try to scan a few this summer. On the other hand, he is always willing to share his secret recipes for distilling alcohol out of tank fuel and potatoes, or preparing a tasty fox meat ragout!... Oh, and my Brit grandfather brought back malaria from Burma. Cheers, Slug

I have most of my grandads Royal Navy medals complete with the box and paperwork they came with. Theres one missing and one has the wrong ribbon unfortunately.
Nothing special, just the standard ones everyone got depending on where they served.
War Medal 1939-45 The 1939-1945 Star The Burma Star The Italy Star (with ribbon for The Atlantic Star)
The paperwork says there should be 5 in total so I assume the missing one is The Atlantic Star with the ribbon for The Italy Star.
I also have his Leading Seaman sleeve patch, red anchor on blue.
I'v always wondered about his service history but have no idea how to find out about it.

I've got a piece of a de Havilland Mosquito that was shot down during the raid on the Gestapo headquarters here in Oslo on 25 Sep 1942. Four Mossies took part in the raid, one was shot down and crashed in a lake outside Oslo. My grandfather went out into the woods and picked up a piece of it.
