I see they are redoing Big Trouble in Little China with Dwayne Johnson as Jack Burton. Seriously? Like my buddy said, you simply do not redo a Terence Hill/Bud Spencer movie, it's just wrong!!!!

Quote:
Jack Burton: When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

Quote:
Jack Burton: Like I told my last wife, I says, "Honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it's all in the reflexes."

Quote:
Jack Burton: Son of a #%&*$# must pay!

Eventually the entire 1980's film catalogue will get rebooted/remade.

Big Trouble in Little China is not a Terence Hill/Bud Spencer movie.

I'm glad that Zemeckis retained some ownership rights over the film because without that he would have no say in whether the film can be remade or not.

Unfortunately, they're not exactly young anymore so we still might see it in OUR lifetimes.

However, it's guaranteed to fail because it won't be a period film. In other words, they won't keep in the in 80s, go back to the 50s, then forward to 2015. They'll start it today, go back to the 80s or 90s, and forward to the 2030s or something, and it will NOT work.

Part of what made it work so well were those eras were iconic and fit the story. Porting it to different ones will destroy it.

I don't understand why they would remake a "one off" movie like Big Trouble in Little China.

There wasn't a lot of great action, the script was terrible, and Kurt Russel and the rest of the cast ignored all of it and treated it as if it wasn't.

The fact they played it straight made it wonderful to watch - since they didn't go for ironic acting, the ridiculousness of the whole thing shined through.

Add more gravitas to the characters and it will be terrible and pretentious; play it less straight and it's a spoof of itself. Try to "fix" the script and it'll be something else.

There were more than a few movies from the '80's that turned out that way. Princess Bride was as much a victory in casting as it was anything else. Wallace Shawn made Vizzini, never to be replicated on the screen, for example.

Kurt Russel was the more box office successful Jeremy Irons - he could take really bland material and make it credible and worth watching. He made Snake Plissken, a decidedly one dimensional character, into a hero. Part of that is Mr. Russel letting the other actors around him do their jobs.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

It will be hard to find an actress of Kim Cattrall caliber for the remake.

I wonder how much inspiration Vin Diesel got from Russel's "Snake Plisken" character for his role as "Riddick"?

The two characters are strikingly similar.

Why can't they take movies that NEED to be remade? Leave my memories alone!
Dwayne is a good choice, he can deliver lines like Jack, but the movie doesn't need remaking. You know they'll just abbreviate it, step up the martial arts and add a ton of cgi.

Ah yes, Kim... such a class act.

Quote:
One of her best-known film roles is that of Lieutenant Valeris in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; Cattrall assisted in developing the character by designing her own hairstyle and even helped come up with the name. Near the end of filming, Cattrall had a photographer shoot a roll of film on the Enterprise bridge set, in which she wore nothing but her Vulcan ears. After finding out about the unauthorised photo session, Leonard Nimoy had the film destroyed.[7]

Nimoy was the executive producer of Star Trek VI. Now we know why Cattral never worked in ST ever again.

I fell in love with Kim the very first time I saw her in Porky's.

Porky's has a bit of a special history down where I live since it was shot on location in South Florida.

Honestly, I wonder. Most of us in our 40s and 50s - which is I think the majority of SimHQ - (I'm 45 now) would jump at the chance to 'go back' to the time of their mid-teens and see how it was back then.

It explains the popularity of threads/FB postings etc. like "what happened to this or that actor / artist"; "this generation will never...."; "when I was young... (followed by some statement of something someone else did)"...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Ugh, Dwayne Johnson. Seems to be cool with the kids these days though, i just find him bland and boring.

I'm not saying they couldn't exploit the nostalgia factor, the issue is more that it wouldn't work as well. There may not have been smartphones and the internet in the 80s, but there were computers (Wargames) and car phones (bricks).

In other words, the stark differences in society and culture between the 50s and 80s are not duplicated between the 80s and today, it's far less, and part of that is what made BTTF work. So yes, they could do it, and yes, it would fail.
