I believe it when I see it, but if he does, good for him. There's been a lot of high profile Scientologists quitting in the last couple of years, this would be a huge PR loss for Miscavige. If anybody haven't seen it yet, check out the HBO documentary Going Clear.

Someone remind me again why Scientology gets such a bad wrap compared to other religions? Really? Just do a little research - it's a frightening organization, and while some may argue that every religion tries to get money from their members, Scientology takes it to a whole new level. If you get the chance, watch "Going Clear" for a little info. Here's an article about it: http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/features/10-things-we-learned-from-going-clear-20150330?page=3And a Time magazine article from 1991 so this is nothing new: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Fishman/time-behar.html One excerpt: According to the Cult Awareness Network, whose 23 chapters monitor more than 200 "mind control" cults, no group prompts more telephone pleas for help than does Scientology. Says Cynthia Kisser, the network's Chicago-based executive director: "Scientology is quite likely the most ruthless, the most classically terroristic, the most litigious and the most lucrative cult the country has ever seen. No cult extracts more money from its members." [Note: since publication of this article, the Cult Awareness Network has been taken over by Scientology. Do not contact them!] Agrees Vicki Aznaran, who was one of Scientology's six key leaders until she bolted from the church in 1987: "This is a criminal organization, day in and day out. It makes Jim and Tammy [Bakker] look like kindergarten."Another one: Scientology devotes vast resources to squelching its critics. Since 1986 Hubbard and his church have been the subject of four unfriendly books, all released by small yet courageous publishers. In each case, the writers have been badgered and heavily sued. One of Hubbard's policies was that all perceived enemies are "fair game" and subject to being "tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." Those who criticize the church - journalists, doctors, lawyers and even judges often find themselves engulfed in litigation, stalked by private eyes, framed for fictional crimes, beaten up or threatened with death. Psychologist Margaret Singer, 69, an outspoken Scientology critic and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, now travels regularly under an assumed name to avoid harassment.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

Very, very high pressure marketing. I've had s run-in or two with folks outside the Scientology centers in Hollywood and San Diego. The charisma, canned routines, and dirty little psychological tricks of a pick up artist, combined with convincing sounding technical mumbo jumbo, and some fairly impressive smoke and mirrors. And they travel in packs. Very creepy, intimidating packs.

The thing is, I would bet a month's pay that they're not just going to let him walk away completely scott free- there's likely summer key good blackmail involved if he ever talks, and maybe surveillance for at least a little while.

That bet is a lock. Scientology is like herpes. You might clear up but its always lurking, waiting to pop up at any moment.

I just don't understand how anyone could believe it. I mean, other religions are old and steeped in myth and spotty records that allow you to fill in the gaps. This is just a B-grade SF story that was then proclaimed "real". If you had a whole in your life that you thought could be filled by religion, why pick THIS one? Billions of people follow the other big ones, this one makes Mormonism look like a divine message broadcast into everyone's head as proof.
