Hmm, as much hard cheese as we sometimes seem to get, it is possible to survive extreme events... yes, even fences!

Or as we say down south, "The sun shines on a different dogs rear every day". Glad you survived!

Did you just put the flames out in an engine fire by using the wind??? Because that's what it looked like. Impressive sir! Congrats on landing it alive and surviving impact.

Yes. I read somewhere from someone about stalling backwards to snuff out the flame, but it looks like what was really needed was to do a dive and then pull up out of it to put them out. I'm pretty sure that the only reason I survived the fence was because I luckily hopped over it with the cockpit and it caught the tail. (I didn't even know there was a fence there, I couldn't see much from that cockpit view.) I ended up with 10 days out, to which I added another week for recuperation. They flew in a high priced plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills, so the burns aren't even that noticeable!

Well excellent job on putting the fire out with the steep dive and pull up, without ripping your wings off! Quite an extraordinary piloting feat sir. You hit the sweet spot! Hats off to you.

I've read in my WWI readings that they would also put the plane in a sideslip to try and extinguish the flames and this also had the added benefit of keeping the flames away from themselves.

High over the Front
I have heard and read that a lot too BJM but I don't remember reading a pilot account of where it actually worked for them.
Sounds good in theory though! And better then sitting there, doing nothing, and cooking like bacon.
Mmmmm...bacon.
Ok, sitting there and cooking like a marshmellow.

I'd say you should hold off on buying any lottery tickets for a while. You sure used up a lot of luck in that mission so I doubt there is more to draw on. yep

Yep!! That vid is a keeper!! Hung out to dry on a barbed wire fence and still alive!!
I guess the devs did a good job in reducing the killing effect of the fences.

Heh, I do have a few of them, don't I? Nungesser stopped by to visit me in the hospital and was like "Kid, I love ya, but you're stealing my gig..."

The trick is to sideslip into the flames while diving-it forces the flames away from the aircraft, and the wind extinguishes them. However, it has to be a fast dive, do get enough wind to blow out the flames, as opposed to simply feeding them.....

Very Impressive sir!
I too survived a run in with a barbed wire fence. I put my survival down to the fence being "one of ours"!

As to extinguishing fires I came up with a wizard idea. The night before a flight I persuade my gunner Roger to sacrifice his liver and allow me to purchase copious amounts of beer for him (preferably paid for on the tab of the last mess member reported missing). Next morning all tanked up we go on patrol.

In the event of engine fire all old Roger has to do is climb out and urinate on the engine! Job done!

So far we have not had an engine fire although Roger assures me he is more than happy to leap into action should the need arise. In the meantime he stated he was willing to consume the required beer at no expense to himself. Good old stick is Roger and I am sure a man of his word!

I think my ideas for survival are one of the reasons for my high esteem in BOC.
