Drive a Rolls-Royce

A 1968 Silver Shadow, that is. For such an old car, it is amazing! You can barely hear the engine start and run. There is absolutely NO vibration, and noise levels are very low. The walnut wood trim is exquisite, as are the leather seats. The engine (a 6.2 litre V8) is silky smooth, and the suspension filters out almost everything with perfect fluidity. If this was the standard in 1968, I can't imagine how fantastic a modern Rolls-Royce is!

One can get used to seeing the Spirit of Extacy through the windscreen smile

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Sweet, you are a lucky guy to drive one. You on the other hand would not want to own one.
Finding this out myself after buying a 2003 Jaguar S-Type 4.2 base. It gets really expensive
keeping them up. Mind you its a lovely car and all.

Nice one
Got to drive one when I was 15, one of the perks of having a father that had a garage smile After that I understood why when asked about how much power the Rolls Royce had, the reply was sufficient biggrin

The old lady that owned the car, she was in her 90s, used to sneak out without her chauffeur, but, she never managed to get the car out the narrow gate to her house, it happened a few times and when she did scratch it the chauffeur was not allowed to go on the side of the car where the damage was in case he seen it smile

LOL, Allicat. The owner afraid the chauffer, who works for her, would find out that she scratched her own car. Not that I'd ever pay someone else to drive my car, mind you, but if I did (just for argument's sake) and he got upset at me for taking it out on my own and damaging it I think I'd be right back to not paying someone else to drive my car again.

SALUTE TO ALL!

The lady was what we would call a little bit senile and eccentric - all the best ones are - she was embarrassed about damaging her car, the chauffeur knew full well what she had done, but he followed her instructions to the letter.
This was around 1970-71, the chauffeur was German I remember, not like that has any bearing on it. I went with my father to deliver the car back to the house and the gates were a tight fit for the car, everyone was happy she could not get the car out the drive as she didn't have a driving licence plus she would have been a danger to everyone on the road.

Now, about that time I got a run in a Aston Martin DBS with Jackie Stewart's brother... biggrin

I do wish there was more to tell , I was 11 years old (1968) at the time, and Jimmy Stewart was demoing the new DBS for Aston Martin at the Scottish Motor Show, I got a brief run round the block in it. It was quick that I do remember, and the red leather seats were comfortable. Jackie and Jimmy were family friends of my father and uncle, Jimmy was the elder brother and went to school with my uncle. Jackie also had a garage on the other side of Dumbarton from us, he specialised in mechanical work where my father's garage specialised in body repair and accident recovery.

I had a more exciting run with my doctor when he rushed me to hospital in his DB5, I was 17, it was on my birthday and had been out shooting rabbits with some friends and a rabbit with myxomatosis that we thought was dead recovered and scratched me down the length of my forearm, within a few minutes my arm started to swell so I got driven back home and the doctor called to attend to me.
He took one look and bundled me into his car and drove off like he stole it! 70mph (110km/h) through the streets of Wick, a standing start up a hill that felt like I had hitched a ride in a rocket, I must have been pumped full of adrenaline by the time I got to the hospital. I got some blood tests done and antibiotics the swelling went down after a few days, but that run in the DB5 I'll never forget biggrin

My doctor had a very rare Ferrari too, one of only 10 built, but I never managed to blag a ride in it, he also had an old Bugatti and some other old cars in his collection, I never got to see them all before he passed away frown
