So I have to go to Eagle Pass, Texas for four days in a few weeks. Depositions in a civil case of of multiple people, including one admitted gang member. It is right across from Piedras Negras, which apparently is on the worst warning for Mexico that the a State Department issues. I'm flying into San Antonio and driving west from there.

I've gone from slightly aware to more concerned as today I tried to arrange for a court reporter to go there and was told by no less than six firms that they will not send anyone to Eagle Pass because it is "too dangerous." The one I got to go is a guy (most reporters are women) who charges something like $50/hour to go there "because of the extreme risk" which is a freaking lot for a court reporter. (That's in addition to the usual "appearance fee" and per page charge.)

Even the Hampton Inn, where I'm staying said it is not good in town safety wise. Wonderful. I'm too pretty to be kidnapped!

Well, looks like there will be two Pelican cases checked along with my luggage. The other lawyer is from a larger city in urban Missouri and he is an extreme metro pretty boy so I've already warned him I will be unshaven from here to then and armed to the teeth at the depos. I guess I'm officially old because I have never felt this way about going to stuff in D.C., Chicago, L.A. or even Detroit.

Sheesh.

I go there once every month or so for service work. I've never had problems but I also get my work done and drive back to S.A. It's about a 3 hr drive.

Yeah, I'm more concerned about going for dinner at night, etc. I'm probably going to pack camp and similar food I guess. Maybe I will get brave - errr I mean stupid...and go take photos. Yeah. Probably not.

For the first time ever I'm getting the loss damage waiver on the car rental. Haha.

Do you have a CHL that's reciprocated in Texas? Don't feel obligated to answer, but if you do, I'd say carry.

That being said, being in a border town on the US side isn't too bad. It's just my personal preference when on a trip in south Texas to have a sidearm. To me the benefits of having one but not needing it far out way the risk of needing one but not having it.

Enjoy the area, go have some local food. Don't worry about camp food or anything. It's not the wild west and you should have no issues with safety. If you lock your doors and don't leave valuables visible in your car, you'll be just fine.

That's what I'd think. But these folks refusing to go there today was surreal. I do have a reciprocal CCL. I also think there will be a shotgun stacked up in the corner of my hotel room at night just in case.

Try to appreciate the positive side... you have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to re-enact a proud bit of US Gun History from ca. 150 years ago...

Ended up driving all the way.

Day 2. Only been stopped by ICE/DHS/Border Patrol once.... 2 hours north of the border on 277. There were tons of BP SUVs until I got within 50 miles of border, and then literally not one....until the actual crossing bridges.

I'm staying on east side of town so that's not bad. Last day should hopefully be tomorrow or Wednesday....then 15 hr drive back. Friendly people, Lots of like minds so far it seems. Even from the BP guy at the "checkpoint." I was completely polite. He saw the Pelican in the back with all the LaRue type stickers and said " that's not such a bad idea." I told him he could look if he agreed he had no right to look and we had a laugh about that...there were no other cars around at all. I almost asked him to take a photo of us to tease my wife with a text about how I got hassled but didn't want him in trouble. It seemed it was just him and one other guy inside a little station.

Let's hope your life doesn't devolve into W&CE territory. It's not off to a good start.
