Laser weaponry would definitely be a plus. Air forces would save storage space and logistical costs by not having to use cannon shells and AA missiles.

I dunno. The fact that the state of the art is a laser that can just about sink a rubber dingy so long as it's not too far away or moving too fast, and that laser and supporting equipment is so massive it can only be mounted on a warship, putting anything useful on a fighter seems like wishful thinking on the part of defense contractors and budget committees. They gave up trying to fit a chemical laser on on a gutted 747, never mind solid state lasers.

One day maybe, but not for a while.

Beyond all the PR buzz, it's probably a defensive system to protect the aircraft,by "blinding" or destroying guiding sensors, both on the missiles themselves and on enemy aircraft. Such lasers would only need a fraction of the power output needed to shoot down an enemy aircraft like in Star Wars.

Sounds like contractors looking for money to spend.

The first use is missile defense. Hit the missile seeker with a laser and ruin it, you're safe!
For true A2A combat, you need a precise prolonged burst on a vulnerable area, which pretty much requires an oblivious target.
For ground pounding...not any time soon. Tank busting lasers on a plane is FAR away.
