I'm helping a guy and I just can't figure out this problem, without it I can't explain it. It is simple, but I'm so drugged up I just can't figure it out. That and I just hate word problems. Here it is: It takes 9 hours for 7 people to paint a house, how long will it take 3 people to do the job?" I know how to do if it takes Martha 4 hours to rake the leaves and her brother 7 hours, how long does it take for the two of them to do it. This one, I just can't recall it.

I multiplied the hours (9) by the people (7) to get 63 man hours. Then divide those man hours among 3 people, for a 21 hour job?
Don't quote me on that!

And you also have to consider the professions of the people involved. How many lawyers, and so on...

I sent the question to a couple of friend who are College and High School teachers, one of them being a mathematics teacher.
This is T's answer:
need to know some things first.....
1....are they workers or govt employees 2. will they be using brushes or a paint sprayer 3. what are the weather conditions? rainy, windy, etc 4. is this a one story or two story home? 5. will they have ladders or scaffolding?
and this is D's answer:
Indeed, once T's insightful expert questions are answered then more insightful expert questions can be asked to determine the solution. But in the meantime
1. Is there a cooler full of beer part of the scenario? 2. if so, then cans or bottles? 3. Is there a fair and equitable ratio of beer to painters? 4. What color is the paint? 5. Is the paint semi-gloss or gloss? 6. Is there so much beer present that there is a possibility that one of the painters will stumble and spill a container of beer in the paint, thus diluting the paint.
Obviously, there is not data to accurately solve this problem (with enough beer the problem actually goes away). "( with enough beer the problem actually goes away)" Wheels

So I replied to T and D and said "it's a wonder if anyone passes your classes."This is what they said: D:1. The more failures in your class, the more paperwork, more phone calls to parents during your off time, the more explanations you have to make to administrators, the more defenses you have to make to justify failing a kid. 2. Considering #1, why would we fail anybody? 3. Just give True-False questions that are challenging, example: Is the United States part of America? Since it all depends on the student's perspective and background then either True or False is a correct answerand if the kid just guesses then how can a teacher know what is in the student's mind thus error on the positive and count as correct.
or give a multiple choice question, example: Is the United States part of America or is America part of the United States? Using the same criteria as the T-F question there is no wrong answer.
or give a short answer question, example: Is the United States part of America or is America part of the United States? Any attempt at an answer is correct since it is relative.
or give an essay question, example: Is the United States part of America or is America part of the United States (minimum one full page is required to get full credit)? If the student writes in gigantic letters that fill up a whole page then by the rubric the student gets full credit. T:Or give the true false test with the answers already marked. Thereby not hurting anyone's ego and self esteem . I see the American Educational System is working beautifully! No wonder China and India is beating us.
