I remember seeing Star Wars in the theatre even though I was not quite 5 years old.

Strange - by complete coincidence I just watched all 3 prequels yesterday, first time I watched them all in one day, or even in the same 5 years.

I still don't get some of the hate there, they may not have quite the impact the original trilogy had back in the day but to me they're still pretty good movies.

I was 12.

We didn't go to movies much and we went to see Star Wars because everyone was talking about it long before it came out.

38 years ago today, one movie changed film making and the movie industry forever!

It was the most wondrous thing I've had ever felt at a movie and to this day, it's still the best movie experience I've ever had closely followed by only a handful of other movies: Terminator, Terminator 2, Die Hard, The Road Warrior.

I can safely say these 5 films were the only time in my life of watching 1000 and 1000 of movies that I can remember cheering and clapping when the credits started rolling.

By the way, today is also my 33th high school graduation on May 25th, 1982.

I was 18.I remember the HUGE queues to get in.Never seen anything like it.I went twice while it was showing at our local cinema.Damn Leia was hot.Couldn't take my eyes off her and that white gown she wore.It certainly caused a great revolving of the swonikles in the lower area for this 18 yo.

Lol Chucky.

I've always wondered how British audiences initially reacted to the film since all of the bad guys (except Vader) spoke with English accents and all of the good guys had American accents. smile

Yes they where really not bad.. I liked them but then again I am a true original fan.. Fuuny thing is the story had already been written it was just that Lucas decided to start in the middle.. I don't get all the hate..

I thought they were terrible over all while the prequels had some great moments I think they suffered from too much story and over the top action sequences. I'm technically a second generation fan since I was born in 1981 but the originals are so much a part of my childhood and having two older brothers the toys as well. Really hoping the sequels will capture the fun and greatness that 3-6 were to me.

I've got a bad feeling about this.....

I had a double whammy impact with Star Wars - saw it in the theater upon release, and it was also my first time in a theater! I was 7 years old, and I remember royally tripping out just on the size of the blank screen, then the opening story scroll started and I was even more blown away, then the opening scene came on and my jaw dropped. There has not been (and I doubt there ever will be) any movie moment like that in my life since then.

Not a bad movie to have as your first. In fact, probably a very good one.

The story I heard for the out-of-sequence order was that the studio heads didn't trust the story when Lucas pitched it in its entirety. They gave him the ok for one movie, so he chose a portion that would stand on its own in case it had to.

Episodes I, II, and III were ok, but I feel that they lessen the impact and evil of Vader in the later movies. Seeing them first also introduces a real "ewwwww" factor to some of the early interactions between Luke and Leah, knowing their relationship when she throws a non-sisterly liplock on him in The Empire Strikes Back, for instance. I'm glad I showed my son IV, V, and VI first. And he's said that he will have his kids (still several years away, probably) watch them in the same order, for the same reason.

Interestingly, the pre-logy completely reversed the focus of the story, IMO. The first three (released) films had Luke, Leah, Han and company as the central characters struggling against the empire embodied primarily by Vader and the Emperor. With the addition of the first three (chronologically) the central character is Annakin and the struggle is against the good and evil inside himself.

SALUTE TO ALL!

I'm failing to remember if there were any movie trailers before Star Wars came on screen - were theaters doing that in 1977? All I can remember is Star Wars itself on the screen - but I also remember being extremely fascinated with the screen size while blank before the movie...

I'd think as a 7 year old kid the FIRST thing coming alive on the screen should have made an impression too, but maybe Star Wars just blew anything else away so hard that I forgot it?

Was 16 and Sophomore in High School. Went to the movie with my Dad and we were blown away.
He loved it so much we went to see it twice in the Theater.

I disagree. If anything they reinforced it. Do you forget that Anakin half choked Padme to death before her childbirth? It was a "prophecy" in his dreams that she'd die during childbirth - the eventual realization that HE PERSONALLY contributed to that (and in Palpatine's words actually killed her) was what literally drove him into full evil.

Yet he eventually "came back"...

I highly recommend that any fan should watch the prequels back to back in one day like I just did.

It really clarified the storyline, to me anyway...

On a side note, this is probably the only place I'd ever engage in a Star Wars thread. Too much static everywhere else on the internet...

I meant trailers for other movies before Star Wars started on the theater screen. I remember that happening for Empire and Return, but I can't remember that happening with Star Wars...

I really find it impossible to believe that Lucas had anything thought out at all for the prequels. I don't even think he even thought about eps 5 and 6 while filming 4 else he would not have had Luke slip his sister the tongue.

I didn't much care for The Empire Strikes Back because it ended and back in those days, we have to wait for a sequel? What is a sequel?

At the time I also felt The Empire Strikes Back wasn't as action filled and as exciting as Star Wars was.

Return Of The Jedi was alright only to a certain extent. The constant back and forth banter between Vader and the Emperor and Skywalker about going to the dark side, rule the galaxy together, blah blah blah just got tedious and repetitive after a while.

There were plenty of sequels before 1980. Godfather 2, the sequels to the original "Herbie", the sequels to the original "Pink Panther", etc.

I am sorry I do not understand your Question?? You asked if there was a trailer for Star Wars. the one I linked for was a Trailer for Star Wars and it was an eraly release and was shown in theaters before the Official release as you see it said coming in summer.. If you listen most parts look very different then the original version like look at the light sabers for Obi One and Darth they where still white and not colored in yet wink
