I'm thinking about re-installing one of them, but not remembering which one I thought was the best... actually I think I bought 5 and it never would work, 1 through 3 I played, loved one of them... never bought 4... so which one was the best?

and was their only one destroyer command or something like that, the counter part to the SH game?

and finally, I THINK I loved the Janes naval sim, but can't remember it's name or know if it can be bought and downloaded online... fleet command maybe?

It is Fleet Command and it is available on Steam.I had mixed results getting it to work, ymmv.

As for the SH series,I really like V as long as it's modded. It looks the best but IV is close.I think I prefer IV purely to get away from German subs.

Not played any in a while now but have IV and V installed for when I get the 'urge' again.

Well (and I really can't understand why they never went back down that route) sh2 and destroyer command were compatible and I loved and spent many hours playing pvp. I loved the destroyers and really enjoyed playing them.

Sh3 with grey wolves turned into something really nice. Still had a few niggly bits. Like enemy destroyers magically following you even though you had evaded them. But was a good improvement.

Sh4 had that copyright protection removed iirc. But I haven't played it.

I haven't played sh5 either as I can't be bothered with ubishafts persistent methodology of lying or misrepresentation towards their customers. I learned my lesson and stopped at sh3.

Its a shame, I love the genre, the tactics and then protracted battles of cat and mouse when engaged.

So for me sh3 was the best but was the furthest iteration of the franchise I explored. However the coop play of sh2 with destroyer command was never replicated and that was a fantastic experience.

SH4, imo. Especially with mods. But I haven't played that in a long while.

I was starting to like SH5 with mods, but constant crashes make it so that SH4 with mods is still my favourite. I just wish I had the time to keep playing it...

Fleet Command actually is a strategy game. Janes688i Hunter/Killer, Sub Command and Dangerous Waters are simulations:)

IMO Silent Hunter 3 is the best of the series. Less "gamey" than SH 5 and IMO more interesting than SH 4 due to the nature of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Installed 5 via my steam account... god damn U play crap would start up, ask me for the key... and say already in use, so un-installed it already. Might go with 3, I remember really liking that one I think.

4 with a couple mods for historical accuracy and physics, but I'm biased in that I don't enjoy fighting against the allies as much as sinking Japanese shipping.

Well, there's the ATO expansion, with the fantastic mod "Operation Monsun". Best experience I had so far, but I just tested SH5 with Open Horizons for a little while...

For me the best is without any doubt SH4!
For some reason I usually prefer the Pacific setting compared to the European setting in terms of WWII sub and air combat sims.
Regarding the Pacific versus Europe/North Atlantic scenario/setting in terms of sub sims I prefer the former (Pacific) because in here the player seems to fight more against warships while in the later (Europe) scenario most of the encounters are by far against merchant shipping (and I prefer to fight against warships).
On top of this I prefer the American subs compared to the German ones (with the exception of the German type XXI which only entered in service at the very end of the war).

Finally in terms of technical features SH4 is also and IMO better than SH3 because it has better graphics (albeit not by much) and specially because it has a much better crew management system. For example while in SH3 you have to micromanage your crewmen in order to for example decide who and when every crewmen will rest or return to duty, in SH4 you don't need to micromanage your crewmen as much since there's shift system (with 3 shifts) which automatically puts the crewmembers of one of the shifts on duty while the remaining 2 shifts are resting and automatically cycles the active shift between the 3 shifts (each shift automatically changes after 8 hours if I'm not mistaken).

I have to agree. Besides, since it's the only one you don't ownlets make it that one! lol

All kidding asideI have SH2, SH3 and SH4 with the U-boat add-onbut not SH5 so I can't comment on that one. I really enjoy being in the pacific for a change of scenery. There are a ton of mods that make it better as well.

I haven't loaded it up in awhilelooks like I should do a re-install.

We have had this type of questions regularly over the years, so I make it brief:

There is no such "the best" - the question is "What do YOU want?":

If you are in love with American surface guns that can dive -> SH4 is your choice, it portrays submarines FLEET BOATS best

If you want to feel the real dark feeling of a true submarine -> SH3 is your choice, you can even play type XXIII and XXI boats there, and yet many more types

If you want to have it the shoot-sink-bum-bum-style with best GFX and clicky-click-arcade, then take SH5, but you must severely patch it (the original game is severely broken!!)

Overall, speaking for me: I got them all racked up and collect dust, but only SH3 is what I play at all - for its best overall-game-play and variety.

Sh3 is the best for german boats, Sh4 is the best for American boats, but you can load up german boats in it too and then it is pretty damned good overall.

It has a lot of excellent mods for it as well.

My first and only submarine game i really enjoyed SH2 - I was much younger then but never really had a desire to go back and do it again

SH2 was fun, though I probably played more Pacific Aces (SH2 mod).

I'll vote for SH4. With TMO and Operation Monsun I've got it covered. I like RFB too, in large part because of the uncertain sinking mechanics. But overall I like TMO better.

I loved SH3, but like SH4 these days.

If mods didn't exist though, I'd probably still be playing SH3.

I think I've played them all over the years and SH IV would be my favourite mainly because I got fed up of German boats. Every subsim seems to be German boats. As a Brit I want to play British subs.

What I need is a mod giving me T and S-Class subs and a campaign in which to use them. I'll dream on.

Agreed.

I've never cared for U-Boat sims, always prefer to skipper American boats in the Pacific. Therefore SH4 is my favorite.

Chucky is right and I agree. I would love to have a British sub sim especially a cold war era one. BLiTZKRiEG, I believe you are a new member so I think its just that you don't know everyone here yet. Chucky is being patriotic and practical.(Two things I admire and try to be myself btw thumbsup) Most everything is German when it comes to these types of games and many of us who have simmed a long time desire to see something new or rarely used in sims. We get fatigued with the overly used themes.

I would still be playing SH3 if I could get my copy to work because I want to play Grey Wolves and I enjoyed SH3 back in the day. I spent hours upon hours following Subsim "how to" threads to a T to try and get it running on Windows 7. One particular sticky's instructions included a link to a file that I supposedly needed and though I checked it, it ended up have a virus which majorly messed with my pc and took several weeks to get recuperated from. That left a bad taste in my mouth plus my old copy has the starforce drm stuff which can be a pain so after that experience I just don't want to try anymore. Perhaps I can try again with a better tutorial but I just don't have the heart to try. Eventually I'll probably just purchase the newer digital copy of SH3 on Subsim so that I can avoid the problems altogether. I really enjoy SH4 as well. I think SH3&4 are the best. I just recently tried reinstalling SH5 with mods and finally got to where that's playable. It really is silly how broken that piece of software is out of the box. I do love being able to walk around the sub compartments and having the newer graphics such as the volumetric clouds but it still seems kind of quirky even with mods.

I have SH3 from Steam and it works fine on my machines running both Windows 7 and 10. If using 10 you will need to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Both SH3 and 4 are offered from Steam at $9.99 each.

I enjoyed SH III until SH IV came out. Loved SH IV partly because it brought back fond memories of hours spent playing Microprose's Silent Service (C64) back in the '80s lol. Agree with Chucky, would love to see some Royal Navy subs done. smile

I think the Subsim copy of SH3 for sale was a later version published that does not have the crummy Starforce DRM and that includes that last official patch from Ubisoft. Apparently its easier and less problematic to get up and running on Windows 7. The Steam version is okay too like others have said for newer operation systems. If you own these it should be a lot easier to install Grey Wolves Expansion and have SH3 up and running on a new system.

Always!

In your case (Steam) the 1.4b patch is installed already.

• be able to communicate in English (does not have to be perfect, i.e. Yorkshire)
• a PC that works !
• TeamSpeak and headset or speakers and microphone will do
• SH3 v1.4b + GWX gold + our own Campaign files
• 18+ (even older, we don't mind!)

Interested? Then click on the image above and have a look..

That was never in high numbers, so not really historically accurate - and really something that submarines (anglo-american) and U-Boote (GER) should avoid at any cost. No wonder why... Sure I remember playing GATO/TENCH-classes and sinking Kaibokans, but that fun was nothing compared to what we play nowadays...

This sounds as if you have never undergone a lengthy DC-attack and never actually tried the fun to "dance with the escorts", did you?
Then you would appreciate the way lower underwater sensor-profile of the Germans. As USAs (which are much rather fleet boats than actual subs) you would be toast right next Hedgehog-attack.

GFX? Really? I mean: R-E-A-L-L-Y?

Crew management: SH3 has one thing that SH4 has unfortunately never seen: S3C - The Silent Hunter III Commander, where you can configure crew-management and far more. Really recommendable!

Cheers!

Silent Hunter Commanders edition, the one that started it all. Sure the graphics are dated, but it's got everything you need for a good submarine game, and with dos box there's not a computer it wont run on really.

Part of it is nostalgia, as it's the first subsim I played seriously (Gato was the first sub game I played though back on the good old Apple IIE). I put a lot of time in Aces of the Deep as well, but in general I preferred the visual style of Silent Hunter. Are there less "twidily" bits in SH:CE then in SH4 (my other favorite in the series) absolutely, but really if as the the captain I've got one hand on the periscope and the other dialing things in on the TDC I'm not doing the whole "command" thing well. You can do a much more nuanced target approach in SH4 with the map tools available (particularly with mods), but with outside programs you can run a pretty good attack party in SH:CE (you can use the same utilities for SH4 to if you feel like it of course).

AOTD (Aces of the Deep) was really cool.
I admit I wish SH3 would have certain elements that AOTD had.

And, aged as it may be, that is why I still support it.
Look: An automated / dynamic WORLD-MAP for all players of German "U-Boote"? YES!!!!!
