Just in case you missed it a B29 mod was found the other day for DCS World. Thread here http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=140372

A few of us have been trying to improve it but are running into the issue where we seem to break the ability for the plane to drop bombs if we change flight (well anything really) parameters in the lua file for the plane. Have a read of the thread to see the history so far, it's hopefully not too big a burden to skim through and get the highlights.

If anyone here has knowledge in this area and can assist in sorting out the issue it would be a real boon for the WW2 and Korean War bit of DCS World.

Cheers,
Stonehouse

I have downloaded the mod. I tried to install it but was totally clueless as to where to put the various files included. I am stuck at work 12 hours a day plus transport. When I get home I either forget or cant find where I can get info on installing the mod. I'm a poor F-86 pilot and worse Mig-15 Jock but this mod is a must. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Years ago I took to emailing myself at my home address important info/links/reminders. It's just not a good idea to rely on memory alone! smile

What are you guys trying to change?

If incorrect characters are used it breaks things, same with incorrect variables for wstype.

So after a couple of beers the other night I could not get the '29s to show up. Last night I was tooling around with something else in Mission Builder and Poof! There she was suddenly. I sometimes wonder what is in that Weeise Beer. Its German. I can only get one B-29 at a time.. I cant make a flight of 4. Anyone else see this happening?
So I ran a mission of 2 B-29 on Recon over the clouds with 2 Migs intercepting and 2 F-86s. I got ridiculed by the Ai Migs at 6000 meters. I felt like I was in a Fiat and they were in Ferraris.

JM, I have taken up the habit of emailing myself links years ago. The mind is the first to go and all. Thanks for the tip though.
Speaking of witch, I emailed myself Chucks Guide to F-86... I think I want all his guides!

Sorry SkateZilla, no-one seemed to notice my post originally so I stopped checking it. Thanks for replying it is very much appreciated.

Anyway the major issue is that we've never been able to get the bomb bay doors to open and the bomb load to drop. Various people have tried different values for wstype from strategic bomber to I think fighter bomber. It's been a while and I can't remember the exact values off the top of my head (at work). Pretty much got most of the flight model related stuff entered in the lua and enabled the crew bailout. Setting the life value still needs a bit of tweaking as mostly the opinion is it dies a bit easy for a big bomber. I've checked the model in the model view and the correct argument (26? sorry again can't remember right now) is being set on for the bay door animation but when in game the aircraft reaches the waypoint with the bombing action and nothing happens. One of the guys in the thread I posted the link to is building a Lanc and he did get the B29 bay doors to open but the FM variables were all wrong and the plane couldn't sustain height and changing even a few variables to something reasonably correct broke the bay doors. So impasse..his version dropped bombs but didn't fly well the one I put together and others worked on flys great but doesn't bomb.

In the end I stumbled across a script that simulated a level bomb drop WW2 style and enhanced it a bit and various people now use that with the B29 with the version of lua that gives a good FM. If you can help get the bay doors and the bomb drops working it would really be a great help and a lot more people would use the mod to fill out the Korean war mission niche. One lucky side effect was I discovered a fix for the FW190 pilot changing from WW2 to modern on bail out so it was helpful work in any case for the community in that I was able to post the fix up as a mod. Almost forgot too, the original author posted up reskinning instructions for the B29 so even if you couldn't help with the doors and bombing if you felt like coming up with some new skins it would also be really helpful. It looks a bit odd seeing the one we have now in a Korean mission.

@Maico, yeah can only put 1 B29 per flight which is just a DCS thing with aircraft of a certain type. I think it is controlled by the value of wstype in the lua for the aircraft but not sure. Changing that functionality and also the way the AI responds to attack needs to change in DCS for WW2 bombers to work correctly. You can get close with just careful placement and setting them to not respond to threats but even then they will break and evade if the enemy aircraft gets close enough simply because that is how modern aircraft of a similar class respond. Kind of like the difference between Napoleonic infantry and modern. I also find adding fighters with an escort task helps as it adds another layer between the enemy and the B29 and delays it's incorrect response. I have a JSGME package that I can make available to you if that will help you install it. I'm about 85% of the way through building a Black Tuesday over Namsi mission using 9 B29s and escorting F86s and so far while they don't work quite right (break formation) they do work well enough for it to seem like it will be ok.

Cheers,
Stonehouse

Stonehouse,
First off, thanks for bringing the mod here. This is the first WW2 Bomber in DCSW and we should be proud of it. They are RB-29s for now. Soon someone will figure the rest out. For now, it felt fantastic high above the clouds escorting these great beasts. The MIGs have a hard time tackling them. I will try myself tonight. Im no coder and cant help. I am very happy just to see it in DCS.

Is this an AI.mod or flyable?

Might take a gander this weekend.

also if you can send me a link to both the -29 and lancaster data I can compare them, there's likely something blocking pylons data from loading.

As I Intentionally Moved the Pylon Coordinates to where I can see the stores, and nothing shows up, Plane just turns tail and heads for home.

Hi SkateZilla
Please check for a PM from me and if the link doesn't work etc then give me a yell. Basically sent you my JSGME package with Markindel's quick graft of a very WIP Lanc lua onto the B29's (where bombing worked but the plane crashes eventually) included.

Thank you greatly for taking the time to help out and hopefully with your greater experience you'll spot the problem with the model or lua. I'd definitely be very interested to hear the technicalities of what the problem was, how you resolve and why it was a problem in order to learn more about the process.

Cheers,
Stonehouse

got the package, thanks,

will compare both, but ultimately I'll prolly rebuild the LUA from Scratch using my template and plug in all your FM Data.

I put the B29 in a mission, and he just pulls up and then the crew bails.

Glad to hear you got it. I haven't seen the behaviour you mentioned so perhaps it is buggier than I believed or you're just a naturally gifted tester and find the bugs that no-one else finds lol. If true you would be a big asset to software dev.

Really looking forward to seeing if you can get it working. Thanks again.

The original LUA, AI would break off and head for nearest base, no stores were observed inside the bays.

The Lancaster LUA, AI would do its run fine, but had issues with flying,

Dunno what changed to have AI break off and climb without stores and eventually the crew bails.

Don't know if it is a clue that will help you but the original author of the B-29 mod made the comment that a patch stopped the bomb drops from happening and then they could not get it going again. This would probably have been one of the late or last half 2014 patches I think. I can only assume that the lua format or some of the items changed slightly but significantly during a patch.

Who's the original author?

Tried to re-build the LUA from scratch, but the B-29 doesnt even show in the mission editor (I think I have a misplaced bracket somewhere)

Will have to go section by section replacing the original LUA Data..

Link to post by author giving skinning info http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2361120&postcount=125 and introducing himself. Rudel from the Leatherneck team was kind enough to contact him on the communities behalf and let him know to drop by the thread discussing his mod. Link to website where it was originally downloaded from http://virtualcockpits.web.fc2.com/mod/dcsw_b-29/dcsw_b-29.html.

tried that mod half a year ago....couldnt get them to bomb anything either...but worse, they tried to dogfight as soon as you came close to them, not behaving like a bomber at all....and even if thats possible to fix, and make them fly like bombers, there is still this ridiculous tracer performance bug....its a joke that ed didnt fix this with the excuse that its going to be fixed with EDGE, while other tracers than the 50.cals work fine.

unfortunately, until this tracer bug is fixed, this mod is useless imho.

Interesting, I haven't had the issue with the tracer fire. Did you disable the shell cases in the lua? Was it SP or MP or both, so far I have only used it in SP and as I said haven't seen the problem even with 9 B29s in formation. Agree about them not keeping formation although if you set them to not engage they more run away than dogfight which is still not correct but is better.

Hi SkateZilla,
Not hassling at all but it's been a while and someone else over on the DCS forums asked as to whether there was any fully working versions of the B-29 available so I thought I'd ask if you'd had any luck getting the lua sorted out?

Cheers,
Stonehouse
