I am ebaying my old motherboard/processor combo and am looking to finally give up on my noble but frustrating FaceTrackNoIR experiment. It is certainly workable, but I am going to jump in with the big boys and go Track IR. What should I get for the best bang for my buck? 4? 4 pro? Do I really need 5? If you could explain why you think one is better than the other, that would be helpful!

Thanks!

I'm using 4 Pro and it's much, much better than FaceTrack. That said, I believe alot of people here are perfectly happy with 4. I don't think there's much reason to go to 5.

TrackIR 4 is just fine, and you can download the TrackIR 5 software for it. That said, I've been extremely pleased with the DelanClip (from Delanengineering.com)

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

Am using TrackIR 5, after my old TIR 4 setup wasn´t working any more. I am very pleased with the results, for my taste it is working much better, faster and smoother than the older version.
When putting the light threshold slider all the way to right it is quite reluctant to be disturbed by other light sources, the only exception is exposure to DIRECT sunlight. When using the 4th version I wasn´t playing during daytime, because my TrackIR wasn´t usable then. Maybe I didn´t use the slider properly at that time, though...

I bought the PRO version, but presently I am only using the conventionel hatclip and am absolutely satisfied with it. If you are heading for a new setup, I would recommend the 5th version.

I went from TrackIR2 to TrackIR5 so I have nothing to offer comparing versions 4 and 5.

The hat clip worked well for TrackIR5. Hauksbee kindly sent me his old pro clip when he purchased a DelanClip and the pro clip works better when indirect sunlight suddenly lights up objects outside a window. Direct sunlight is still a no go as in morning sun lighting up me or what is behind me in house. Thanks again Hauksbee!

Forgot to add; Rick, the baseball hat clip for my TrackIR5 worked fine for flying while wearing reading glasses. I think the visor blocks the camera from seeing the glasses.

Cool guys, please continue to comment. I have read several other threads on the web and they seem somewhat split as well. If you can give specific examples of what works and what doesn't, I am thinking of updating my FaceTrackNoIR thread into a more general head tracking solutions thread and would love to get some specific case examples of what works when and what doesn't.

That being said, I currently have one bid on my processor/board that would completely cover a 4, of course, if it goes up another $30 by Saturday, I would get the 5 unless you convince me that 5 is the only way to go regardless of price! thumbsup

Can't help on the 4 to 5 comparison.
No need to purchase the pro clip unless you have the money. My 5 came with the tripod hat clip, at least i don't recall paying extra for the hat clip. It clips on the visor fine, but I added a twist tie on the vertical brach of the tripod and secured it to my hat because I'd removed my headphones and snagged the hatclip which then flew several feet and wanted to avoid that happening again.

I have heard the hat clip is fragile. You can't prove it by me as I have sent it across the room several times removing headphones. Never broke. I am much more careful now.

1: Grab headphones, 1 ear piece in each hand, and gently spread.
2: Move arms in a vertical motion to clear head, hat, and clip.
3: Rotate arms forward until you see the headphones in your hands.
4: It is now safe to remove cap.

I'm running TrackIR4 with the 5 software. It works just fine.

I wear glasses and only spot it having an effect if I look right up (as in above the level of the trackIR camera. But if you're doing that then you aren't looking at the screen anyway.

Strong sunlight lighting up areas behind you can be a problem. I actually corrected this by moving the PC in the end. And that's only on really bright days.

I have TrackIR 5 and I went straight from FaceTrackNOIR so I can't help you much with comparisons, but what I will add is my hat clip is made out of metal so I don't see how it could be fragile. I think you might me the Pro Clip which is the plastic clip that you attach to your headphones. Rick, I'll also say that the difference between FaceTrack and TrackIR is like night and day. Since I was a brand-new TrackIR user I just decided to go with the latest and I think it has been a good decision so far.

It's made of metal, the hat clip. The three reflective prongs can get bent or the reflective surface scratched up. I was worried about stepping on it or having a dog run off with it. So it is firmly affixed to a hat.

My hat clip came with a few extra reflective strips which I haven't had to use yet. It is a TrackIr 3 running v5 software - as it has to with WOFF. It was a gift from Winding Man who had bought a TrackIr 4. Thanks Winding Man! yep

So, I waited and waited and waited for my ebay funds to clear, they finally did this morning so I sprinted over to the Natural Track website to plop down my order and... they don't even have a PayPal option!?!? So, I could have ordered a week ago... sigh Anyway, I went with the TrackIR 4 and pro-clip combo they have for $119.00. I figured I didn't have to spend any money I didn't have that way and also $170 seemed a bit much just to have some decent head tracking ($119 seems a bit much too, but we'll see!) I'll report back with results for anyone else on the fence...

High over the Front
I got the 5 years ago and just recently accuired the ProClip.
Everything works fantastic.
If you have any issues with ambient light the ProCip is highly reccomended.
As a bonus I find it to be much more precise with almost no quirks at extreme angles like you sometimes get with the hat clip.
Good luck!
