IIRC, you can have 2 diff cards from the same generation (eg. a 970 and a 980), but the 980 will be throttled back to the spec of a 970 when you run in SLI. Maybe I'm wrong though?
Not with SLI, they need to be the same GPU Core, 2 x 970s, 2 x 980s etc. they can be from different vendors running different speeds, then it'll just throttle down to the slowest of the two.
Gotcha, so I can run a "normal" 970 with my "super-clocked" 970 just fine then. Good to know!
I'll still wait for reviews, but this could finally push me to go full SLI in about a year, when 970 prices go down, and new titles start out-stripping my GPU (other than P3D, the 970 can chew up pretty much anything I throw at it, since I'm still on a 1080 monitor).
Notable btw, that Nvidia is becoming the go-to card again for this platform. Early on there were some Nvidia side issues with P3D (AA not working right, for example), so it was looking like AMD was going to have the upper hand. I've not heard any news of cross-fire supporting P3D though, so we're back to square one.
