Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.

Absolutely loved this game, and IMO the beginning sections before shields and all the advanced laser stuff is available are even more fun. It's like commanding the Enterprise biggrin

Awesome game! I wish the kickstarter for the sequel had worked out. One of the best space battle games, but I had to get some help for some of those battles.
There are B5 and BSG mods for it too, but not very far along last I checked.
I liked those initial ships a lot too.

You can buy it at gog.com for $9.99. There is a way to make it run widescreen res but it cuts off some of the screen so I just run it at 1024x768. You play from 3rd person perspective only and give orders on where to go and whom to attack.
