I caught this movie in the theater the other night. Very good. If you are a sci-fi fan, try to catch this one.

No machine whose design we understand, or are able to understand, will ever become conscious. That won't prevent neural net AI machines from taking over all our jobs. If you want to fear AI, fear it for that. This is what you are missing, the groups that are working on true artificial intelligence is attempting to bring it to the point where it does not need "our" understanding but it's own when it starts to "learning" by itself. When Quantum computers are the real thing and working as they should it will be a complete other ballgame!

Saw it in January when it was over here - not bad. Why program AI to be like us - talk about asking for it - all our flaws + some new ones + super fast/strong

When Quantum computers are the real thing and working as they should it will be a complete other ballgame! Yes, quite so. Any neural net built with finite, fully understood electronic parts, can be monitored, and its states detected and followed. It is a fully finite construction. Such a machine can never achieve consciousness, any more than any other conceptual construct which we can analyse. A quantum machine, whose states are indeterminate, and which can entertain multiple possibilities simultaneously, and solve problems by considering an infinite number of permutations, and compute the outcome of non-trivial infinite regressions, will be something whose states we will not be able to understand, and thus should have the potential to become conscious.

The first digital non 3D non XD non IMAX show every day was $5. It's been like that for many years now - at least 5-6. Now it's $6.65 I don't know when they raised the prices because I haven't had the time to attend an early bird first showing in about 5 months. I have an eye doctor appointment this morning to get fitted for reading glasses (CRIES!) and then I am free the rest of the day. The first showing is at 11:30 am. Therefore, to get to my point, is this movie worth $6.65?Thanks!

That is a cheaper price than about 75% of the US.

Ours went up too, I'm not happy about it. At least when we go at 1pm we usually only have a couple of other people in the audience. $8/ea matinee, $10/ea evenings. Not even 3D. I think they run $6 matinee on Tues, but what good is that? Used to be $6.50 matinees until fairly recently.

absolutely, as long as you can enjoy a cerebral, psychological thriller which is very character driven but is not an action movie.

I liked it very much (just came back from it) but it made me wonder how many examples I know from science fiction where the (true, self-aware) AI is at the center of attention of the story (or at least plays a crucial part in it) where it doesn't turn out to be a really bad idea. So far I can only come up with Freefall my favorite web comic (from about This episode. And even that one deals with all the troubles of vetting AIs whether they are tolerably harmless or just too dangerous to toy with. Quote of the week: "What you need is a control group that is out of control." I mean, the way I read Asimov's Robot stories, he seems to point out that as clear-cut and concise and loophole-free as they may appear on first, second, and third thought, his three directives still don't work in everyday life. (All the practical problems of real-life coding aside, that the laws require contextualized knowledge and can't be hard-coded at on of the lowest software layers) HAL 9000? A murderous, manipulative sociopath. WOPR? Needs a kid to stop him from starting a nuclear war. Skynet? Succeeds in killing mankind. Leiber's Berserkers? Sweeping intelligent life from the galaxy since about millions of years ago. Nanobots? Delicious but deadly. Neuromancer? Tread lightly, puny human!
