This weekend I'm in Wilkesboro for Merlefest, an annual fundraiser put on by Wilkes Community College, named for the son of North Carolina music legend Doc Watson. Which means a full weekend of local and regional bluegrass and folk bands, as well as some national acts.
Trampled by Turles headlined Thursday night:

Piper, we go every year. My fiancee is from North Wilkesboro, so we go up for the weekend and stay with her mom. Much less travel time. Saturday was good, but I guess I've seen the Avett brothers too many times in more intimate venues to be more impressed. The real highlight from Saturday, in my book, is always The Waybacks doing Album Hour- this year was Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" with Joan Osborne. Last year it was "Deja Vu" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash> Those lovely ladies onstage are the T Sisters, from Oakland:
And here's part of the set from this year. Took Joan and the boys a while to get into sync between them, but once they did, it was a great set:
Dwight Yoakum was the headliner on Sunday, and it took exactly three songs for me to remember why he hasn't been relevant since 1998- every single song sounded exactly the same, until he attempted a cover of "Ring of Fire." One of the Ten Commandments of Music is, "thou shalt not attempt Johnny Cash if you sing Honky Tonk."
Rest of the weekend was a good time though, even as cold and rainy as it was.

Also, Piper, Mudcat, ever heard of Floydfest? We went last summer, and are seriously planning on going again this year. Grace Potter is headlining.

Never heard of it before. Only name that I recognized is Drive-by Truckers in my quick skim of it. There might be more in there I missed, unfortunately though, I've hit that magical combination of age and enough young kids where those kinds of things no longer seem appealing :P (36 and 3 under 5 years old). I think at most I'll make it to the bluegrass festival in downtown Raleigh.
