I was watching the show Impossible Engineering.

Amazing how they are able to build it at 4-5 different companies in a dozen pieces and then put it together and every thing has to fit and match down to the last mm.

Why are there 2 islands?

I just think it only carries 40 airplanes or a combination of F-35B and attack helicopters and transport helicopters to add up to a total of 40 aircraft.

That is not a lot.

The front one is the radar, weapons, ship steering etc etc, the rear on is for everything ATC, its not as radical as it looks as thats how most carriers are, its just that theres a smoke stack between them smile

its flipping tons when you think that we have 0 carrier capable aircraft at the moment banghead Also as a country we've never gone for the huge sized carriers that other country's have, mostly because we never let the navy have that many flying things, and secondly we've gotta get them into several hundred year old ports that the big stuff just cant get in!! (which is why one of the american carriers had to anchor of-shore recently!)

Reading up on Wiki, it doesn't make sense to me the Royal Navy would retire the Invincible class light carriers before they had an operational replacement.

Seems like someone at the Department of Royal Navy (or whatever they call that department in Britain, the Sea Lord? The Admiralty?) dropped the ball.

40 is fine when the only guys operating anything bigger happen to be your allies. And frankly, might be a better idea. 2 smaller ships VS 1 massive target makes sense. As to only 2... I would think 4 would be better.

The construction of these things is vary reminiscent of how the victory ships where made. With the added wrinkles of needing to be shipped all over the UK to 1 area for assembly. With the ww2 victories was multiple lines building sections and in same yard all moved to 1 slip and welded together. Even with 1940's tech, you build to a uniform assembly jig, it should all end up fitting. Now we also have computers and stupid accurate measuring devices.

I can't believe they discontinued the F-22 already after only 187 units.

Anyway, I want one of these.

It is still a much more capable design than the french carrier and especially the soviet/russian designs. Would have been more capable with a CATOBAR config, though...

Here's an excellent description of the project. (it seems the site doesn't live anymore)

Does Russia/Soviet Union still have any operational aircraft carriers?

I know China has one that is a refurbished former Russian aircraft carrier.

Haha!

I feel sorry for that Test Pilot!

They say having 2 islands is an unique British innovation.

Front one for navigation. Rear one for ATC.

They didn't once during the entire show mention any of the defenses the carrier will have.

I guess they wanted to keep it top secret but you can find that info on WIKI or on most websites.

The Admiral Kuznetsov is still around.

Though it is more of a hybrid warship. A Kiev-class 2.0. . Considerable missile armament and the smallish air group primarily focuses on ASW. Soviet naval doctrine considered the submarine as the primary combatant, not the carrier.

For the Chinese, the ex-soviet hull is probably only good as a testbed for carrier doctrine and a source for copying technology.

According to WIKI, China is building 2 carriers right now to be operational in 2020 and 2025.

But they are planning to have 5 carriers.

The Russian aircraft carrier seems to be not very reliable nor sea worthy:

Don't worry - when they shift to drones, they'll be able
to stack them vertically, and they be so much lighter,
they be able to carry a couple hundred.

Yes, the Royal Navy didn't exactly do things the Proper Way, ironically. smile

They had a carrier, they had naval jets. They gave up their jets, but still had the carrier, this time with RAF birds on it. Then they got rid of the RAF birds, leaving nothing to carry, so it couldn't be a carrier, so it went. All the while, a new carrier jet was coming, but they knew the old carrier was going, so they started a new carrier. Somehow the carrier got finished before the jet. confused

And now, this:

France and the US are still the only countries with nuclear carriers right?

Probably,

But the French Carrier is smaller than the new RN ones.
So we as British taxpayers are going to be stiffed with a massive fuel bill.

guys.. to clarify.
the Royal Navy did not get rid of their jets. they were screaming to keep them.

the current Conservative government did.
who were advised not to do it, but did it anyway. then sold the Harriers we did have, to the US for parts, for a song.

one of a long line of idiot military decisions by this "government".

Well the current opposition are the ones who ordered the carriers.
