In reviewing the various threads on PE, I still have the following questions:

It seems that Britt44 came out with a patch 1.04 titled "Britpack 44 update 1.04." Is this patch only for the Britpack mod or do you update the game with patch 1.2 and then patch 1.04?

Is the Britpack 44 mod and the ostpack mod mutually exclusive so you can only load one at a time?

I understand that there are 2 versions of the 3D control center, one for 16 bit and one for 32 bit. Can the 32 bit be used for plain PE SE patched to 1.2 if limited to 16 bit? What is the latest version as there appears to be some confusion on the date stamp?

I have seen references to a version number for PE ("The latest version (after version 1.03) of PEx can use more then 2 gigs of ram, and that breaks compatibility mode."). Where is the version number located? It is not in the properties tab of the game.

Britpack 44 is a mod for Panzer Elite 1.2. patch 1.05 became PEx.

Britpack 44 and Ostpack are both mods for PE 1.2. They are mutually exclusive to PE 1.2

No, there are four versions. The first is PESE (DX6 & L&L). The second is when P.E.D.G. added 32 bit color. The third is the version released with Nordic Games remastering of the mods CD of PESE (PEx release 1.0). The fourth is the version I made to address video cards with more then a signed int 32 for on card memory (DX9).

the last official build of PEx did not use large memory aware. Any of the 1.04 tests seem to crash on supported versions of Windows if you use compatibility mode.

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I still have some questions.

I have 2 versions of the 3D CC that I downloaded. One version is dated 1/1/2000 in the modified line of the properties menu, but has the 32 bit color option and is labeled "select for pex 32 bit." The other one was modified on 1/13/2014 but only has the 16 bit color option. Was the 2000 date on the first version a mistake? Can I use the 2000 version for all the different engines (PE 1.2, PEx, and PP2x) but only use 16 bit for PE 1.2?

I tried to do some research on PEx and is patch 1.03 and full install 1.03 the latest version? Is PEx a dead end as it seems most mods were never completed for it before work started on PP2x and PE3?

OK, I had forgotten about the 16 bit only version for PE 1.2 using video cards with more then 2 gigs of memory. So there are 5.

Yes, the build date of 2000 is a mistake. That project will only build on my windows 98 computer, and it seems I forgot to set the date when I built that. Select for PEx 32 bit is the correct one. You can use it for PE 1.2 if you select a 16 bit color depth.

The project was halted for a while when PE3 said I could not stop them from using our game engine code. Most of the group left at that time. I kept tinkering with it a bit until Slomo and Murkz showed interest. They are MP players and they wanted to update the PP2 mod that they enjoy, so I switched to supporting there work.

PEx is the game engine work, with a few examples of the new capabilities. When the game engine changes are stable, PEx is updated to the current release version. In the members section of the pedg forum is a section for the work on PEx 1.04. It is currently on test 17. Now that I know the pivot points for most of the 3D models are at center of mass for the hull and not 0,0,0, the oddities with terrain fallowing make more sense. Now the cockpits do not update properly if you jump to a tank that uses more textures for the cockpits then the one you are in. I am a full year behind with releasing version 1.04.

I do not know if there will be a PEx 2.0. I find that I enjoy coding less and less. I have quit several times over the last 13 years, so the only thing I am sure of is that it will never pay any bills.

Right now the waiting list for repairs is 3 weeks. Repairs would be bussier, but I refuse to work for Democrats.

Okay. I think I understand most of your last post.

I am going to use the 3D CC file with the 2000 date stamp and labeled "Select for PEx 32 bit" for PE 1.2 and all future versions including PP2 and PP3, but watching out for the 32 bit issue.

So PEx is simply a game engine. Is it compatible with PE 1.2 mods? Would you suggest using only the 1.03 patch or going to version 17 of 1.04- or not using it at all and after playing with PE 1.2, going to either PP2 or PP3?

Yes, but... For PE 1.2 related you should use the original PESE one and you should run a 3D control center any time you switch between the 16 bit engine and the 32 bit engine, unless you only use 16bit resolutions allowed in the original PESE 3D control.

No, the new game engine needs more data. I do try to maintain a manual for the released version. http://home.comcast.net/~ab707/pex/ The beta/alpha stuff is a bit on the fly.

It depends on what you want from PE.

My personal opinion is that you should play at least a bit of PE 1.2 before trying any mod. The Brit44 mod and MY's mod use there own modified versions of the PE 1.2 code. BobR and I may not be friends, but the overwelming majority says Ostpak for PE 1.2 is a must play. Yes, that was a left handed compliment.

If you do not care about graphics but demand time of flight for the shells, skip straight to PEx 1.03 (or any beta back to game engine beta 16.1).

PE3 is BobR's attempt to merge Ostpak, Brit44 and MY's work into one PE install. PEx 1.03 is able to do what he invisioned, but he lost his 3D world data files he created Ostpak with and I refuse to write him a tool to easily correct the errors. It's complicated :O !

All of the development since PEx 1.03 has been using a mess of files in my install and Slomo's PP2x build. Murkz has done yeoman's work with PEx and other sims. Daskel recently released a king tiger and engine sounds mod for PP2x.

I had not backed up my code work in a while and I started working on terrain following after adding unique engine sounds. Slomo also did not back up ( A fisherman and a mechanic when to a bar ) so PP2-x Beta 1.2 ships with test 5 of the terrain following work. Test 8 seems to be better then my latest "I think I have every possibility covered" work.
