So,

My parents just got back from their winter hibernation south of the border. During their visit they went to San Diego and saw the Midway exhibit. They picked up this model for my son (8yrs).

Thought it would be a good opportunity pick up the hobby again and start working on the boxes of models in my basement with the kids, you know, so I can justify buying more.

Got out my old Paasche VL airbrush, haven't used it probably for about 15 years or so. Still worked great.

Some initial pictures. Not sure if I have the correct grey, but it seemed close.

I think it will be a fun little project for the both of us. I have actually never done any Naval models before, so it is a learning experience for both of us.

Next step will be to paint the dark red waterline, and then a whole bunch of deck guns.

Not sure how often we will work on it, but I will try to keep this thread up to date.

Cheers!

Cool - I've never made a ship before but I've looked longingly at a few

I have always loved looking at the models made from the age of sail. They are absolutely beautiful but the time they must take has to be astronomical. Good luck with the Midway, I keep telling myself I am going to get back into this but it is just another in a long list of hobbies I want to do.

Enjoy, I payed a visit to the Midway exhibit in S.D. a few years back. It is worth going to see. However, I thought the Ship was small. It started me wondering if the one in S.D. is a Fleet Class or Escort ? anyone know. Thanks.

At almost 1000' long and 45-64,000 tons it is not a escort carrier.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Three: Midway, FDR, and Coral Sea. At the time they were decommissioned, they were the smallest carriers in the fleet- and are definitely dwarfed by the Nimitz class. Apparently Midway also had some nasty tendencies for heaving and pitching in rough seas that made recovering aboard...interesting. Is the kit modeling her before the angled deck conversion?

I guess one needs lot of patience to assemble tiny parts.

I served a couple of cruises (US Navy 86-94) on the ship before it was decommissioned it was a piece of crap. Not many who served on it talked highly of it. It was long overdue for a decommission. The Japanese government was our only obstacle in not doing it sooner.
