Hi all,

I just noticed that WoP: Special Edition is out on GOG.com, which means it doesn't need yplay anymore or any other DRM. That's great news to me.

I haven't flightsimmed in a while, my last titles where BoBII and some light Falcon 4.0 BMS, some of the Thirdwire series and RoF. I cut my teeth on IL-2.

So... right now I'm in the mood for some "quick" dogfight action.

Visually I want to upgrade over BoBII and IL-2, though I understand it's not going to be Cliffs of Dover like.
Realism-wise, I want decent weapon strength, no unlimited ammo, no magic labels and a somewhat believable flight model. Ability to takeoff and land would be nice too.
Content-wise I understand it's scripted missions and some "QMB" with the player always alone.

Can it do ground attacks?

I'd totally appreciate if some of the guys here with experience in that game could give me a feel if it fits the bill above.

regards

It's been a while since I played that but I was always impressed with the graphics. What put me off were the mission parameters, like 'shoot this number of aircraft down' etc.

I did like the MP side of it but that's probably dead now.

Looks gorgeous, but the missions are totally unrealistic... Almost impossible to finish many of the missions.

Is there a mod around, so that you can proceed anyway?

Battle of Stalingrad has some quick dogfight action in some of the servers. And as it is from the same folks who brought you ROF you will be familiar with it.

Thanks Uriah. For me BoS is not an option because of the activation system and unlocking crap. If they made it truly offline and all planes, all weapons it would be my preference.

If you're coming from Il-2, I'm not sure you'd be happy with WoP. It's arcadish, and damage and flight models are disappointing. When it came out there was not a lot around, but now with DCS and BoS fighters, there's no reason to settle. The unlocks are annoying for BoS, but its not just beautiful, it feels like a real sim. Wait for a sale, and check out YouTube clips in the meantime.

Thanks all who answered.

I have to admit, I like it. Of course it's arcade, it has "restarts" which appears to be needed, at Sim I black out long before the AI... lots of stuff that make it far from a serious sim.

And yet... a large scale bomber formation over Dover in this kind of GFX detail, lots of Spits and Hurris battling it out... it's just the right thing for someone who can't dedicate hour-long mission time anymore and just wants a quick "flight" after work.

Reminds me a lot about Thirdwire stuff. That's a good thing.
