http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22...ue#.VRr_YJPF_38BURSTS of radio waves flashing across the sky seem to follow a mathematical pattern. If the pattern is real, either some strange celestial physics is going on, or the bursts are artificial, produced by human or alien technology.
Telescopes have been picking up so-called fast radio bursts (FRBs) since 2001. They last just a few milliseconds and erupt with about as much energy as the sun releases in a month. Ten have been detected so far, most recently in 2014, when the Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia, caught a burst in action for the first time. The others were found by sifting through data after the bursts had arrived at Earth. No one knows what causes them, but the brevity of the bursts means their source has to be small hundreds of kilometres across at most so they can't be from ordinary stars. And they seem to come from far outside the galaxy.
The weird part is that they all fit a pattern that doesn't match what we know about cosmic physics. It almost looks like a April fools joke but it isn't.

If its coming from orbit then how can we..... Nuke from orbit as its the only way to be sure ????

There's a lot more that we don't know than there is stuff that we know.

The Jedi Master Is that a variation on the famous Rumsfeld quote?
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

I didn't bother making distinctions between what we know we don't know and what we don't know that we don't know.

Seems that our telescopes, radio and optical, are reaching deeper into time/space and that a lot of pet theories are coming into question as a result. I seem to remember that even the Big Bang theory is being questioned nowadays, and that has been pretty much a staple since I first started paying attention to this stuff, lo these many years ago. (Love that phrase, LOL)
Science is so cool.

Interesting. Spread-spectrum several millisecond bursts whose frequencies are staggered in time, and the slope of frequency vs time varies in small integer multiples. The arxiv article abstract says also they "tend to arrive at close to the full integer second", making it look a lot like some local wierdness, likely of a miltary intelligence nature. Except that they don't occur very often. Still, it might be a sufficiently distinctive signal that a receiver could be made that would pick it up quite ambiguously out of the noise - another variation on Hedy LaMarr's broadcast scrambler concept. In that case, particularly if it was used as a yes/no kind of one-off signal, it wouldn't need to be used often.
It might even be contrived to have a spread spectrum whose dispersion mimics natural phenomena in order to be less noticeable, unfortunately attracting the attention of those who study natural phenomena. At any rate, considering the degree to which simple integer relations are revealed in the signals, it would seem an anthropogenic source is the most parsimonious explanation, with the current data set.
