The last time I stepped inside a Blockbuster to rent a movie was in 2003. That's the year I signed up for Netflix.

Dude, when most of us here were little, renting a movie wasn't even an option! You had to pay attention and memorize it the first friggin time! Want more of the movie? Buy the book!

Good point. I don't think I rented my first VHS tape until I was in high school (1988-1991). I did get cable in 1986 though and watched a bunch of movies that were long gone from the movie theatres.

and do you remember how expensive VHS tapes were? I used to have a 2nd job at a BB, I remember films like Pulp Fiction were very expensive when people didn't return it and we had to charge their CC $100.

Block Buster once seemed like a fact of life. It was actually as normal to me as a McDonald's. I still cannot imagine a world without McDonald's . . . but Block Buster is gone so who knows?
My first VCR? Sony C6 Betamax.I think it was somewhere near 500 at that time. However, just like PC games, over the years the Betamax section at my local stores shrank to eventually nothing.
My mum eventually got one,a Ferguson Videostar if I remember rightly,it was VHS and the first time I saw it I thought something was wrong with it,or the tape it was playing. The quality after the Betamax was poor.
*edit* Lol,found the video that prompted me to buy the C6,starring John Cleese no less.

I had no idea that John Cleese did commercials for VCR's. That must have been a lean year for him.

Not just commercials.I went on a customer relations course once and we had to watch a video which starred Mr Cleese. It looked like a similar vintage to the C6 commercial.I think he was the customer and much hilarity ensued as you can imagine.
I can't find the exact one but here's something similar.Lots of familiar faces in this one, particularly for us Brits. Not sure you guys over the pond will recognise some of them.
I remember my mom bought High Road to China for $80 on VHS. I could only ask her "Why???" when there were far better films she didn't buy and no one cared about that one...
Most of our tapes, though, were taped off cable. No CP there!
