http://news.yahoo.com/bride-convicted-involuntary-manslaughter-wedding-140802628.htmlIf you read between the lines, it sounds like the defense wants to say, 'yeah, she pulled the trigger while she was upset, but didn't mean to do it.' I think what happens is that people are all riled up, if they handle the weapon in an agitated state, they're almost there already, and perhaps they pull the trigger and genuinely don't remember doing it, their memories either selectively block it out, or they cannot believe what they did, so therefore, they cannot tell themselves the truth. It's denial of the most fundamental kind. But I've never had any firearm shoot itself while I'm handling it. It only works when I pull the trigger.

I have seen video of a semi-automatic pistol being held by the grip, fire just by shaking it. It was demonstrated a couple times and would seem to indicate a very poorly manufactured piece.

My first AK had a similar problem. If I used a certain kind of ammo, if I racked it when a round went in, the gun went off. If I used the the military surplus stuff, I'd be fine. I think it was the depth of the primer.

When I was a kid I saved up for months to buy a compound bow. I was outside getting ready to shoot my target when it just went off. Put a hole in Dad's storage shed. Not my fault, it just went off!

I think it was the depth of the primer. Military rifles without a spring-loaded firing pin usually leave light primer hits when chambering a round. Military primers are harder than civilian, and with a perfect storm of soft primer, firing pin inertia, and a chamber that's at the short side and/or an overall round length at the long end of tolerances, it's possible for the round to fire on chambering. "Possible" as in "slightly less than astronomical odds of it happening."

Only when the sear is not properly engaged, and that was when I was adjusting it's engagement, it was not on the bow when I was doing the adjustments. I have had the bow go off by mistake, it was my mistake and I should not have had my finger on the trigger at that point ... it does make a big hole in the steel garage door

It happened to me when I was just a lad.I used to spend my summer hols on my Aunties farm where I had the use of an air rifle for 'pest control'. One day,one of the sons decided to 'up-arm' me with a 3 bore bolt action .410 shotgun.I suppose you might call it a 'garden gun' but it was a huge upgrade for me.Well, occasionally it would miss-fire and after one such occasion I was tugging on the spring-loaded bolt mechanism and somehow it went off.It peppered the door to the dairy farm and thank the stars no-one was stood there. I couldn't hit anything with it anyway so when I had exhausted the ammo I went back to the air rifle,it was safer. If my mum had ever found out she would have stopped me from going so I kept shtum. This was probably the same gun as I remember.

Due to various mechanical issues it's entirely possible. That being said, it's also an incredibly rare occurrence that normally affects poorly manufactured or assembled products.
When you see it in a news story it's 99.99999999% likely a case of an idiot making an excuse.

IE Finger On Trigger is Carelessness. I have laid my firearm on the table, and although several people walked by it for hours, it never ONCE shot anybody. Go figure.

There was one time that I was wearing a T-shirt with a certain hippie logo on it and I walked by a gun on a rack. It totally went off on me, you would not BELIEVE the foul language that came out of that barrel!

I had buddy scare the living hell out of us when his Mossberg duck gun went off every time you worked the slide. Something was seriously wrong with the trigger assembly, as I recall.
