"CVN-80 will also be the first U.S. aircraft carrier since America was commissioned in 1966 not to be named in honor of a person."
As huge an honor as that is for someone, I wish they'd go back to giving ships their own names again like this.

I remember when they announced it at the inactivation ceremony for CVN-65- a couple of my old chiefs are back aboard her for the decom and defueling effort, and the nuke world had a mini explosion when SECNAV made that announcement. There isn't a prouder name in U.S. Navy history.

CVN-80 was renamed Enterprise, It had a different name planned, but it was announced at or around the de-commisioning ceremony for CVN-65 that CVN-80 would be renamed the Enterprise.

Some of the names are dumb. I agree naming them after presidents is ok, but that was a later development. Naming them after admirals or other people, though, is a big waste.
The Brits had a better system, names like Indomitable and Invincible are better suited.

The Jedi Master Lots of great names for ships in Royal Navy history. Nelson, Rodney, Ramilies, Warspite, Repulse, Prince of Wales, Royal Sovereign, Hood, Victory, etc.

There isn't a prouder name in U.S. Navy history. What about USS Constitution? After all she is the oldest commissioned ship in the Navy. v6, boNes

We're still using "Prince of wales" "Warrior" and "Victory" (I'd love it if the RN could refloat Victory for fleet reviews, and the First Sea Lord's jollies/training exercises....) USS Defiant? (AKA Capt. Ben Sisko's Mutha F**kin' pimp hand.)

Its not the bullet with your name on it you have to worry about. But the one addressed: "To Whom It May Concern"

Let's just hope it'll have catapults that can get aircraft off the deck Are you talking about the drop tank thing? We've been going back and fourth about that in a couple of Navy Nuke groups for a few days now.
