ordfering a new laptop for my daughter... understand that 7200 is better then the 5400... but does that SSD add anything to the setup?

256GB mSATA SSD Boot + 1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gb/s- NV

Would games install on the SSD, while music, pics, videos on the 1TB SATA? what would you use for video production...etc etc...

I love the speed of my SSD and it would be difficult to go back to a mechanical drive.

I have a 240GB SSD that holds my O/S and all of my games. My mechanical drives hold all my music/downloads/back-ups etc.

The OS goes on the SSD, that's an absolute no-brainer. Generally you want to use it for things that will benefit from the much faster access, for example commonly used applications - including games. Regarding the latter, it will decrease loading times but doesn't usually have any significant effects on framerate.

Photos, movies etc should all be stored on the mechanical HD, and it makes sense to move all the Windows 'My Documents' type folders to the HDD as well. That has the added benefit of not losing stuff if you need to reinstall the OS.

If it's to be used for video editing, the SSD could be very valuable as a cache for temporary files while working. Whether that's the case would depend on the software being used.

Agree with Brun.
However, for videos, I use a black HDD. You need space, a fast write speed for capturing, and a large enough SSD is just too costly for not much benefit. The slow part of editing is rendering, which is cpu intensive. The SSD just isn't needed there.

For that laptop, go with OS on the SSD. It will eventually fill as restoration points and patches, so as recommended, relocate documents, pisc, videos, music and use the HDD for everything else.
