I thought from what I read the pilot stayed in and the CP went outside?

The Pilot has 6000 hours or more, long-term employee, the CP is rather new to the company. If the CP did it, it raises a lot of questions, political and screening/hiring wise.

There was an Egypt Air flight in 1999 where the pilot crashed the plane, saying Allah Akbar before he did. As it turned out, he was wanted for sexual inpropriety in the US and knew that when he arrived home in Egypt he would be fired, so he decided to commit suicide, taking innocent lives with him.

So, why would someone do it and kill innocent people? Because sometimes they don't give a crap about anyone else.

As it was said in "The Dark Knight", sometimes people just want to watch the city burn.

But he did not say a single word to anyone. All that could be heard from the cockpit was even, normal, regular breathing noise. If he would have wanted to make a statement, he would surely have said something, preferably over the radio?

What I don't understand is that he initiated a controlled descent, that took 8 minutes. The only explanations I can think of are:

- the fly-by-wire system of the Airbus would override any extreme control inputs (like a dive)
- he calmly wanted to ride "into the sunset" (who knows what motivates suicidal persons)
- he didn't want to cause alarm and panic in the cabin (according to the audio recordings, the passengers apparently never noticed that anything was wrong until seconds before impact).

And let's face it, if you believe you have nothing to lose- why would you bother about the consequences of killing so many people along for the ride?

Gods, it's blood chilling though.

Okay, just saw the confirmation... yes it was the CP.

I guess immediate procedure from now - as already in use on some other airlines - is that a flight attendant enters the cabin whenever one pilot leaves.

Well, I dunno.
If I saw the pilot slamming on the door trying to get back in the cockpit I wouldn't really think nothing of it.

And, yes, I do assume that if the Pilot was outside and the locked Co-pilot inside- the pilot would totally try to get in at all costs...

According to the French Prosecution (the press conference), they only heard yelling and screaming shortly before the impact. Before, it was calm.

Mr Robin said Mr Lubitz was a German national but does not know his ethnicity or religion.

Which means, that the french prosecutor, Brice Robin, has no information about the ethnicity or religion of the CP.

How is this handled with your airline? Could someone from the outside - who has the right code - override a door locked from the inside?

I talked about this, around at work and apparently there are three ways to lock a door.

A normal "open to all", a "combination lock" that only those with the right number can open, and the "lockdown" that locks the door without recovery for 20 mins.

...

I hardly believe that putting a flight attendant in the cabin if one of the two main crew-members leave is the solution, but I guess they (airlines) had to say anything.

That's not how the lock mechanism is designed. If what has been released is true the door lock worked as it should have.
I cant tell you how my airline handles it-but common sense could lead you to a better procedure.

The lock worked as designed. That's why you need a FA present.

This will never happen. You have to have a human pilot presence just in case something unexpected happens. As far as I know, computers don't yet have things like intuition and abstract reasoning.

That's what I thought. Thanks. I was just confused by the video posted further up that described some "emergency override procedure".

I found that a little irritating, BTW, that such a video would be released via YouTube - even if the information in that video is incorrect, giving every wanna be terrorist the idea to try to torture a real or imagined "override code" out of a flight attendant. screwy

they don't need much rest, can determine and calculate crash avoidance and don't commit suicide .... that future is much closer then most people realize

it's already happening ....one step at a time

Lubitz doesn't sound like an ethnic backgound at all to me.

Besides, even if it was a non-German name it wouldn't mean much. I myself know enough Germans who carry a name of non-German origin and who are 2nd, 3rd or even 4th generation descendants of immigrants. If you take stereotypes into account: the only "non-German" thing about them is their name.

That's not how the video describes it. The override first just triggers a 30secs signal telling the cockpit crew that someone activated the override. Within those 30secs the pilots can put the switch into "Locked" position, denying the unlock override. So in case a terrorist is in front of the door, the pilots are still in control to keep the door locked. Only if the pilots do not actively put the switch into "Locked" position, the door will unlock after those 30secs.

What is not mentioned in this video is some information mentioned lately on the web, that there is another option for a successful override after ~20 minutes; I assume that is meant to be an override with the switch in "Locked" position, ...
