This is a short series covering the Fighter Weapons School GAT 5/6 scenario that comes with Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations. This is a simple scenario to start with and there are many, many ways to execute the mission. I have 8 F-4Es up against some F-5s and an SA-3 site. Video 1 outlines my plan and we will have to see how it goes from here. smile

No, thank you Dimitris! smile

Part 2 is now up. Lots of lessons learned looking back on this one... Setting Reno 2 to "weapons hold" would have been the thing to do if I did not intend for them to engage. I assumed (wrongly!) that leaving their radar off would have the same function.

I could have also made better use of "ignore plotted course when attacking" function to ensure the F-4s maintained radar lock throughout the AIM-7 flight time. I was very conscious of the requirement to maintain lock but still let a few get away from me due to Reno 1 circling at the end of their plotted route.

More to come!

Dare I suggest that you try to take advantage of another inherent strength of the F-4E vs the F-5E: persistence. An F-5E RTBing due to bingo (because your fighter screen drew it out far out from its base) is as much a "mission kill" as an AIM-7/9 kill.

Of course there is the chance that the scen author has foreseen such a bait and has instructed the F-5Es to stay within a screen area rather than come out to you. But like everything else it's a calculated risk smile

Hey, that's good thinking. smile We're given exactly 2 hours and that looks to be about the limit for an F-5 depending on the altitude band. I have the same plan set up to run automatically now just to see if all my micromanagement did any good so I'll give different timing a shot as well...

Ok, all six parts are up. Thanks a lot to everybody who checked them out.

Has anybody else had more success? One other option that occurred to me is to stand-off with my SEAD flight and do some traditional "weaseling", drawing the SA-3's fire until they need to re-load. Come to think of it, the terrain is perfect for that. Endless possibilities...

I was thinking of using the Standoff range of the GBUS

My tactics were quite similar to yours in that I sent the air-to-air phantoms up to the NE. I had the lead group radiating and the lag group lower and not radiating. They never spotted any F5s. My attack groups stayed low and flew up the valley to the SW of the target and got jumped by all the F5s at low alt. It was pretty much a slaughter.

I think mutual cooperation between the pairs, both in the fighter-sweep and SEAD & strike legs, would have helped significantly.
