Is there anyone who is using Windows 8 with good results for games and sims? I can have a Windows 8 for free from a friend, or I can buy me Win 7 (64bit). I need to upgrade from 32bit, to be able to use more memory.
Now I heard from another friend, that Win 8 causes more problems with games. Does anyone have other experiences?

Hey Olham,
I'm using Windows 8.1 x64 and it's great for gaming.
There are a few caveats unsurprisingly though.
Battle of Britain II Wings of Victory will not run in Windows 8 or 8.1 full stop. You can get into the game and start a flight and get into the flight, but it will always crash out after 5 mins or so, So if you play this game then Windows 7 is the way to go. This is the ONLY game I have come across that does this.
Ironically, the only other problem is with Microsoft's own Games for Windows Live client.
You have to run this abomination of DRM in compatability mode of Windows 7 when you install it and run as Administrator, otherwise it will not run properly. Thankfully GFWL is being patched out of a lot of games that did use it though.
Apart from that I have had ZERO problems with Windows 8.1, bearing in mind that I have over 300 games in my STEAM library, they all work fine.
Sim wise I have tried FSX, Pr3pared, IL2 : 1946, WOFF ( Obviously ), ROF, IL2 : Battle of Stalingrad, War Thunder, IL2 : CLOD, DCS Blackshark, DCS Warthog and Flaming Cliffs 2 and they all run perfectly.
I will also argue that Windows 8.1 deals with multicore processors better than Windows 7 and also has superior Memory management and better performance with SLI/Crossfire rigs in my experience.
The other bonus is my PC boots up in 7 seconds.
If you can get a copy for free, then it would be a no brainer for me.
Regards !

Thank you all, guys - I can get Win 8 for free from a friend, and I guess we can update to 8.1. Maybe I'll do it, and if it should fail me, I could still buy Win 7 (64bit) Professional. I'll think about it.

I have been given a 'free' Windoze 8 dvd. (Don't tell Bill Gates) Ran it and didn't like it at all but now downloading 8.1 and maybe even 10. This is on a dual boot pc as I have a few drives. There is no way I would install 8 over 7 which I know works. Maybe I will install 10 on the w8.1 drive just to see what happens. But I will be still running WOFF on my W7 64 drive for the moment.... (and I didn't pay for that either ) Even if the Micro$oft SS come to get me I will not let them in. I have been using their stuff since DOS 3.0 and have never paid them a cent. That's what friends are for

I'm using Windows 8.1 64bit with no problems. Granted, I don't use that stupid start screen with the "apps" on it. I use Classic Shell to run mine like it was Windows 7. That was what turned me off on windows 8. My daughter had it on a laptop when it first came out, let me try it. I felt like I'd entered a time wrap and swapped places with my Grandmother when I showed her my first pc running Windows 98se. Since then I've used it on a friends PC with the traditional look and am fine with it. He flies war thunder with the keyboard despite my giving him a Logitech wingman extreme 3d! I plugged in the wingman for time flying! Some older sims won't run on it so I never saw the reason to change. Ten might be worth a look if I find a sim made for it that I like, but that may be so far off in the future that a different rig would be made for it and the sim.

Installed a 'free' copy of W8 on my spare drive. I must say I don't like it at all. It insists that I install all the updates before getting the update to 8.1 This seems to take a long time and it is hard to tell what the box is doing, if anything at all.

After waiting hours for W8 to download about 120 updates it then tries to install them and fails and then backs out the updates. I am fed up with it anyway and will now format the drive. Viva W7 64 ultimate! W8

Yeah, I'd never seen Windows 8 before, but I fell for the marketing hype, thinking it would be like Windows 7, only better. stupid me. I should have known better. Once that start screen came up, I was looking for a way to bring back the "old" familiar look of Windows. Someone told me about classic shell, so I googled that, found the site, and installed that. Now my Win 8.1 machine boots up looking like my old Win 7 did. The only thing I really miss is the Solitaire game from Windows 7. I REALLY miss that.
