Quote:
Three Florida anglers are thought to have become the first to land a great white shark while surfcasting in the Gulf of Mexico.

Derrick Keeny, Gabriel Smeby and Kyle Register were casting from Panama City Beach's shore in Florida at 3:15 a.m. Sunday when the almost 10-foot-long predator struck one of their lines.

They spent 45 minutes reeling in the adolescent male that was hunting in the surf

I know these are rare, but Sharks are my biggest fear in the ocean. Even up here in New England when they only come up to Cape Cod are they even close to me, I still look all around while body boarding...

Ya know, it's funny, but going into water during darkness always was inherently scary to me. Even in places where I know nothing big lives or hunts.

Seeing that such a guy comes close to the coast during the night kind of explains the point my body knew all along...

I find being stuck in large bodies of water disconcerting regardless of night or day, something larger than you is always swimming out there wink

That and the human body doesn't agree with wave forces or drowning.

If your wading in the deep ocean, at any one time, hundreds of flesh eating creatures are lurking directly below you.

Well, if you're wading in it it can't be that deep.

That must have been one helluva thing to pull in. I'm surprised they managed it at all

And this, friends, is why I am in awe of sailors. I dislike beaches (tiny sand deserts next to great big wet ones) and find absolutely nothing favorable to screwing around ocean waters.

Anyone that puts to sea is doing something I would never do without a seriously compelling reason.

When one is tired the odds of dying just from going to sleep on the ground are infinitely smaller than if one did the same in the ocean.

And on land one can run from fire most of the time.

I scuba dived in Papua New Guinea at night on World War 2 Japanese shipwrecks.

You saw nothing but fins circling our boats and we still dove in.

They just scatter. They don't bother you.

Land usually doesn't flip a nut due to weather and sink your house without any means of survival either, unless you live on a mountain.

In early Spring and Summer of 2014 two Great White sharks that were tagged off the NE coast of the U.S. were being monitored in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles offshore. This probably shows that their population numbers have grown and so their range has expanded, although the Great White may have been coming into Gulf for thousands of years ...we just don't know

Magnificent animals... when watching them on TV.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

...of course I know that most sharks - including the largest (that's still alive), the whale shark - are not dangerous to humans and that even Great Whites almost always leave humans alone... but still, the feeling of 'all sharks are dangerous' is still there.

Having said that, I absolutely believe they still deserve their spot in the ocean and I hope the senseless killing of these truly magnificent animals will stop. Fortunately in China there's now a campaign against shark fin soup.

Great Whites migrate from feeding ground to feeding ground.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

It's the same with bears, or any other large predator. They may leave you alone to live in peace, but they're still 3 times your size with 10 times the weapons attached to their faces. They command a healthy respect smile

Ok, how did you KNOW that was the seal's boat? Did you recognize the registry, or does it have seal-specific features I'm missing?
