I have to say...I'm tempted. I will wait for some reviews but I am skeptical. Here's what scares me: I think MS is so desperate to get everyone moving to their next OS that this carrot might have some strings. I'm picturing on page 347 of the user agreement that you will have to agree to for the free upgrade...their will be a clause in there that you need a valid Windows 7 serial number...and once you use that serial number that you cannot go back to Windows 7 as that serial will be invalidated now. Maybe my tin foil hat might be on a little too tight...but not much surprises me with software companies these days. I'm definitely expecting a lot of online only features that act as a sort of DRM scheme and probably a lot of data collecting that can be sold for revenue. I'm very interested to know what folks here are thinking. SimHQ's Lee T has a short article here: Windows 10

It seems to me that MS is trying to tie Windows licenses to a specific hardware (=the computer on which is was installed), and I think that they will not agree to "unbind" an activated license. Maybe they will even have a clause that by activating the license it will invalidate the Windows license that you used before. This is in line with their previous licensing policies.
The point is, in order to install Windows 10 Microsoft eliminates the middle men (OEMs, regular PC shops) as the responsible trade partner for the end-user. For example, in Germany EULAs are basically invalid since you can agree to them only after the purchase. Therefore it's a "hidden/surprising" clause under German law which automatically renders it null and void. As a consequence it's perfectly legal to sell pre-used Windows licenses. I think that MS wants to eliminate this second-hand market. Once that an old Windows 7 license has been eliminated by migrating to Windows 10, there will be no way back (that is, you can't just yank out the old Win 7 disk and install it on the same or a new computer if you decide that you don't like Win 10 after all.
At the same time MS reduces the installed base of older Windows installations, which makes it easier for them to stop the support for it. The popularity of Windows XP became a support liability for MS. They could announce the "end of support" years in advance, people would still not let go of XP (and many still haven't). Aside from the cyber security aspects - and I think that despite its reputation, MS Windows is probably the second-safest PC operating system on the market; only OpenBSD is probably more tight - it's also a matter for software developer how long they must support legacy Windows versions.
MS's new strategy is to provide common API/development environment for software developers for the entire range from handheld, mobile devices up to server farms and everything in between; they tried that with Win 8, but the move was badly prepared (even though the idea in itself probably wasn't so bad); well, I suppose they learned a thing or two in the last three years. This offers tremendous advantages for the developers and may actually help them to attack Google in the Android market. But the strategy only works if they can make Windows 10 really successful, if they can achieve a very fast market penetration. Therefore, Win 7 and Win 8 are in the way, so giving away in 10 for free makes sense in the context of the overarching business strategy.

I have the same fear Force10. I like the idea of a free O/S that if you go by the numbers, ought to be good. If the Win 7 serial is void in the process then I have a 'spare' Win 7 serial that I can possibly use.
If only Linux had better support for games I'd ditch Microsoft in an instant.

Yeah. I am. At least on my laptop running 8.1 right now.
I may or may not try it on my gaming desktop.

I have 8.1 on this PC and once I figured it out and arranged my desktop and start screen to suit me it works just fine. I run games from as far back as 2003 with no problems. My son has Win 8 on his machine and it sucks balls. I very much like the idea of being able to play console games on the PC ...or at least that's what I think that's what lee's article said. As do with every new bit of software or tech , I'll wait about six months for others to be the guinea pigs and get initial bugs sorted before I try it

I'll certainly put it on at least one PC I have that's running Windows 8.1. I have three laptops, one of which is basically used as a desktop system since it's hooked up to an external mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc., and that's running Widows 7 so I won't upgrade that, at least not right away. I also have an older laptop running Windows 7, and I won't upgrade that either, nor my gaming rig.
I also have a 15" laptop and a 10" tablet, both running Windows 8.1, and I will try 10 out on the 15" laptop first, then if I like it, the tablet. The tablet includes a snap-on keyboard, so it will be interesting to see how 10 handles that transition.

I am running the preview on one of my machines now and don't see any reason not to move to it when it comes out.

same here... been running a technical preview for a while now... very impressed with it, compared to Windows 8 on my kids computer... and everything works perfect, no issues... old games like SWAT4, GR, and R6... along with all of the newest... it seems M$ has a pattern of a great upgrade (win7) then a bad one, (Win8), so Win10 should be good.
I previewed it because of the XB1 and PC... whatever it's called, sharing abilities... but most of that ain't to functional yet.

I will try it, but I will also preserve my Windows 7 Install fresh on a separate drive one way or another,
if they invalidate my serial for going to Windows X, I have unused license keys sitting around.
