Panzer ..."Can a brand new recruit for the Navy try out for the Seals right away?"
Yes, soon after joining usually if the person joins under a 6 year commitment with a guaranteed shot at attempting to pass the rigorous pre-course physical/mental tests. Typically they may drop two years off the 6 year enlistment if the candidate doesn't even pass the pre course tests. The armed forces get a lot people to fill the ranks just from those who try out for Special Forces and don't make it ....because only a tiny % do.

^ I'm in the Navy and I didn't know that. I was under the impression that SEALs were recruited from other communities. And only some communities at that; not every rating can apply to SEALs.
I just Googled it and I guess those requirements have all changed. Man, I'm getting old.

I wondered the same Panzer when i watched the movie and then followed it up with a bunch of Chris Kyle interviews and whatnot. I like to know (with some films) what is the story behind the story. This guy HERE seems to have researched it fairly thoroughly

In the Royal Navy there's a fair amount of leeway with transferring between navy and marines. You do need to have done a 2 year stint as a rating or a "General Duties" marine, before you are eligible though. So if you have a mechanics badge/qualification in the navy you could transfer to the marines as a vehicle mechanic. With regard to SF/SBS recruitment, generally, you are asked to "Step this way, sunshine" if they spot the potential. So an exclusive, invite only club.
Its not the bullet with your name on it you have to worry about. But the one addressed: "To Whom It May Concern"

about the movie, the fact that he wears a civilian suit at the official burial of his fallen comrade Mark puzzled me...seems quite unlikely , doesnt't it ?

The sniper was loosely based on a sniper called Mustafa, so it is mostly true although I don't think that anyone had a personal vendetta against him. He is a mere mention in the book from what I understand. All they say was that he was a n Olympic shooter who was using his talents to kill American soldiers and Iraqi police, but that was mostly it. The impossible shot kills him in the movie, but in the book the impossible shot kills someone else less "important."

Luttrell also went right to the Seals after Basic and Corpsman school http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_LuttrellLuttrell enlisted in the United States Navy in March 1999. After graduating bootcamp and Hospital Corpsman A-school, he transferred to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Class 226; however, due to a fractured femur he suffered on the obstacle course, he graduated with Class 228 on April 21, 2000. The book The Warrior Elite: The Forging of SEAL Class 228 by Dick Couch describes the training of Class 228, and names Luttrell as one of the graduates of that class. PM, it's a great read, my GF is going to read it after we saw the movie.
