I guess that makes this thread a sticky! rofl
(I'll be here all week... be sure to try the salad bar!)

We've had the break here as well, as you'd expect. We set a record on Thursday for the coldest temperature ever recorded in March, -5°F (ok, give me a break it's Pittsburgh...) but then it warmed up and we haven't seen any freezing since Friday night. The sun is warm and you fell like running outside, beating your chest and hollering like Tarzan!

I just removed a bunch of horrid pines from a steep hillside I own. I'd love to do just as you, MudWasp - Plant sugar maples and wait. But I'm nigh 60 years old, and I figure it'd be the next guy that benefits from my enterprise!

There is a maple syrup festival in our county every year - a park has a big grove of maples on a nice hillside that makes tapping go all downhill. It's good to get real maple syrup once in a while. So Happy (and abundant) tapping to ya!!

Quebeci French, mon ami? and then what dialect was the following phrase depicting?

Our Mr. Wiggins did look quite the frontiersman!I hope to get more game when my daughter & her husband finish their house. I figure if I buy the tag & shoot it, he can just have us over for dinner. My dear beloved isn't much on wild game - but gee, if she was, we might never have to buy meat between the dear and turkey around here!

Mmmm.. Tapping maples. Ain't done that in years.
Fresh syrup for one of my favorite meals (pancakes and bacon) and the remainder make into candy.
You know being an adult and having all these adult responsibilities really blows. Takes time away from all of life's simple pleasures. Clearly I should have been born into money. And in my neck of the woods it kinda looks like we are all done with winter. Cold at night but 40's during the day for the next 10 days.

Could be a Quebecois talking English, but it's more like "Chiac," the local Franglais dialect in southwestern New Brunswick. Here the Acadian population have spoken French at home and English at work so long the two have merged. You hear wonderful expressions like:

Worry pas ta brain!

J'aime ta skirt la way ça hang.

J'ai wiré ma satellite dish avec mes own mains.

Je te callerai back.

Thanks, Raine! I find local dialects like that fascinating, if difficult to understand.

Pittsburgh has its own lexicon wrought by a great influx on immigrants from all over Europe, the Middle East, and Mexico & the Carribean Islands; and we had a vibrant African-American culture as well; the Hill District in Pittsburgh used to be full of jazz clubs and was the place to be, and the town across the river from me had a nationally recognized Nationality Days festival and parade. That was in the heydays of the steel mills & coal mines, so all wasn't fluffy bunnies and rainbows, but it was something!
