Just in case anyone is interested. https://geoauth.google.com/gev0/free_trial.html (the link says free trial but it's the full version) I have it installed.

They must have found their error. Just tried to register and and it kicked me out
claiming technical difficulties.

I'm not sure it's an error Jim,it is free from now on.Maybe they are overwhelmed with key requests.

Went past and downloaded to install and it wants registration key. Must be country
specific for this free version. Certainly won`t be paying what they want for pro pricing
here.

I looked at the features and couldn't see anything particularly interesting which differentiated it from the non-pro version.

What am I missing?

Its the 2013 pro version release. I see what you mean. Not much difference. enhanced street views
in areas I had never seen them in some areas. Been street viewing some of the dangerous roads of
Peru where Ice Road Truckers went.

There no suggestion on the features page that any imagery is enhanced compared to the standard version.
