Does anyone know if we have a Dave E8N floatplane model anywhere?

Hi Moggy,

What period are you looking at? According to Francillon - Putnams Japanese Aircrft of WWII, the E8N2 (755 built of E8N1 and 2) was only used during the first year of the war before being replaced by the E13A Jake (1418 built) and to a lesser extent the F1M2 Pete (1114), and the old E7K2 Alf (about 300) soldiered on in first line service until 1943. I suspect the main use of the Dave would have been on the old light cruisers - Nagara and the like as the Jake might have been a bit too heavy for them. I don't remember seeing any Daves of Alfs but I think there was a Jake and a Pete in EAW, but as I get older my memory is not what it used to be.

Jakes from the cruisers Chikuma, Tone and Kinugasa did the pre attack recce on Peal Harbour and I belive that they would have been the main floatplanes at Midway but Green does say that some Daves were in use in that battle so I guess that is why you are interested?

I expect you know this already but just in case!

Pete

Hello Peter,

Just doing a quickish refit of Midway for recent exe versions, so spreading over five planesets, so may a few slots at the beginning and end of the battle spare for a few oddities. The texts seem to suggest that some of the capital ships in the Japanese main fleets carried (amongst others) a Dave or two, Have laid hands on everything else - Petes and the like, but can't find a Dave.

Or indeed a Jean B4Y?

No, I didn't think so. But I've found one of Jan Tumas' models I can pass off as a Jean,

so don't be telling anyone.

Hi Moggy.

Not sure what the original was but if you ignore the wing struts it looks quite close. Seems to be the JNAF equivalent of the Blackburn Shark in performance and role! Active in China but relegated to training by 1940 I think so I am not quite sure what you will be using it for - now if you were thinking of the Japanese invasion of China that would be a very interesting scenario with a real hodge podge of aircraft on the Chinese side of British, American, Russian, French? and perhaps even German origin. Of course quite a few on the JAAF/JNAF side as well though I don't recall too many of them modelled in EAW? I would be more than happy to help with the research if you wanted - I have a book on Chinese aircraft somewhere on my computer but it could take a while to find it.

Hello Peter,

Eight Jeans were carried by IJN Hosho, which was the principal part of the carrier group of the main body of the Japanese 1st Fleet in the Midway campaign.

That carrier also usually carried eight Claudes, but the sources conflict as to whether these were carried on this campaign. So I'm going to put them in anyway smile

I also need a G3M2 Nell which was part of the Chitose Air Group 11th Air Fleet based at Wake, and waiting for the success of the Midway occupation. Unfortunately though this aircraft was to be part of Jan Tuma's Nomohan campaign, I unusually have an FM but no model. Nearest thing we have which looks like it is a Fiat BR20.

Not sure how they fit in your scenario but I have the following Japanese hi-res aircraft:

Ki-51
Ki-48
B5N2
D3A2
J1N1
Ki-43
Ki-44
Ki-45

I have other hi-res models that might fit:
P-35
P-36
P-43
P-66
Maryland
Hudson

Also, I have an Albemarle lo-res model that might work for the Nell

NOTE: Some of the twin engine hi-res models need 1.4 because they use the D.3dz file.

Hello Ray,

The D.3dz (and the other two) work in the latter versions of 1.29.

It would be good to put in the hi-res Kates and Vals, but I would needs skins for the Akagai, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu, and Zuiho air groups. Running lo-res on all of those at the moment.

Do we have a hi-res Zero? Still running lo-res on that plane as also need five skin sets.

Do have hi-res models and skin sets for the Wildcats on the US carriers and with the marines at Midway.

Also have a hi-res Dauntless, but need new skin sets for the three US carriers and the marines at Midway.

Do not have hi=res models for the Devatators, the marine Buffalos and the Avengers at Midway.

Do have hi-res B17, but not B26 or PBY.

Just picking my way through this upgrade.

OK, I wasn't sure where along the progression the new 3dz files were activated.

There are two hi-res Zeros in SPAW. A white one and a green one. The green one is in the V1 slot and I think the white one is in the 190A slot.

No hi-res Avenger, Buffalo, Devastator or PBY.

Of the four, the Devastator would probably be easiest as I have a hi-res Battle that has a similar form.

I have a hi-res B-26 too.

Would be nice to get the Devastator up to standard, even though they are Zero-bait frown

Could you drop the hi-res B26 over?

Many thanks.

Ok, look for the B-26.

I'm in the middle of a medium size construction project here but I hope to finish by the end of February. I could look at the Devastator then.

Thanks. Arrived okay. When you have the time. Having problems getting the old Midway setup to run in 129, but it will be sorted soon.

Gradually remembering things I had forgotton, Midway is being shoe-horned into 1.29. A strange thing it is revisiting files I first created or edited best part of 15 years ago. Some new screenies soon.
