Quote:
NEWS: A Greek F16 fighter jet has crashed at or near Albacete air base in central Spain.

A Greek F16 fighter jet has crashed on take-off at the Los Llanos air base in Albacete, central Spain, a Defence Ministry spokesman confirmed by telephone to The Spain Report. The plane crashed right where there were other planes parked on the apron, he said.

There are no details at this time on whether or not the parked planes were occupied by other pilots or technicians, or if the pilot of the crashed F16 managed to eject. The Los Llanos base is used to stage NATOs Tactical Leadership Programme, in which the Greek aircraft was taking part.

The duty officer at Los Llanos air base told The Spain Report that firefighters and emergency services had just arrived and are still working to control the blaze and crash site. No details on the number of victims or the fate of the Greek pilot have yet been confirmed.

The Albacete Air Base Facebook page posted a note saying the F16 had crashed on take off. A spokeswoman for the Tactical Leadership Programme was unable to comment due to the unfolding situation.

So, the Greeks crash and take others with them. The timing is tragically perfect. nope

Based on the latest updates from spanish media the crew did not make it (it was an F16D). There are reports of at least 11 other injuries.

That's terrible. RIP to those who lost their lives.

Maybe time to retire the F-16 and F-15?

Not necessarily, people crash their 2015 Dodge Chargers all the time but that's not the car's fault wink

For a lot of countries the F-15/16 are the staple of their air force, and buying some wacky newfangled jet simply isn't in the budget.

I can't see why that it would be time to retire the F-16 or F-15. Can't see any basis for it.

??

How is that relevant. The article pointed out that it was most likely due to pilot error.

The article is vague. It seems unlikely the there'd be any official statement already, and whatever manoeuvre the plane performed could well have been due to a mechanical fault.

Pretty tragic regardless.

What I read is that he did not had enough power during take-off, so mechanical failure might been the problem.

#%&*$#.

Not sure how he managed to hit the apron, the base is a pretty straight setup with a West/East Runway and the military areas all to the north. Lots of fields and empty space on all sides... terrible accident.

When something breaks on the jet, it could be new or old. Age affects likelihood of something breaking, but new ones crash just as well.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence on Monday night, the two Greek crew members, both captains, attempted to eject, the canopy came off, but ejection was not observed. They both died in the crash.

Eight French airmenthree captains, one lieutenant and four non-commissioned officerswere also killed.

21 people 10 Frenchmen and 11 Italianswere injured. Seven are in a serious condition in hospital

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I saw some video on the news tonight and spotted a 492FS F-15E. According to the RAF Lakenheath website, we had some airmen on the ground there but they are unharmed.

My condolences to the people that were killed and hope the survivors pull through.

Business as normal here, F-16s are flying today, can hear them overhead heading to the ranges, and also can hear large ordinance detonating, it is enough to rattle the windows!

All greek F-16 Block 50 have been grounded. There were reports that it was a birdstrike, or that the FLCS failed. 6 planes and 4 helicopters destroyed as well.

I can't help wonderinfg if there was some showboating involved... would like to know takeoff direction and impact location, seems unexplainable how he ended up hitting people.
