According to Rolling Stone, anyway. 50 over 10 years would be an average of 5 per year, which I think is a fairly high number, and may not leave many out. That may explain why movies like "Starcrash" made the list.

I haven't seen all of them, and might change the order on some that I have seen, but an interesting (and nostalgic) list, I thought:

Yeah, 50 scifi movies within a decade is way too much. You're going to have a lot of crappy movies in the list. #50 "Laserblast" was even riffed by Mystery Science Theatre 3000. 'Nuff said.

They're including tv movies and pilots too.
Buck Rogers was obviously a series and they're counting the pilot at the start of the list there. I think Damnation Alley was a tv movie too, but I could be wrong.
They have Star Wars at #5, behind The Man Who Fell to Earth and the original Solaris. WTF? If not #1, it should at least be #2 with Alien. I love Clockwork Orange, but no way I could put it before the movie that's so iconic for at least a generation.

Both Buck Rogers and BSG were included in the list because their 2 hour pilot episodes had theatrical releases.

I distinctly remember seeing both 2 hour pilots in the movie theatre when I was a kid and I was already living in Miami so I guess that made me a big city folk. : D

Yep, BSG and Buck Rogers were both released in the theater. I think BSG was just outside the US at first, but was later released in theaters in the US. Buck Rogers was definitely released in the theater first, and I remember seeing it there.

Damnation Alley was also a theatrical release, and I remember seeing that one in a theater too.

Going off on a Damnation Alley tangent, I read an article saying that they built the prop vehicle to basically be able to do whatever it did in the movie (including being armored in the nose enough to go through a concrete wall). Years later, after moving to California, I was driving in Los Angeles and saw the vehicle sitting in some lot somewhere.

I agree and I would not argue too much with someone who wanted to put Aliens at #1 over Star Wars but c'mon man . . .#5!

As for Miami in the late 70s, it was nothing like it is today. It was actually a place I liked living in then. By 1995 it wasn't.

The Black Hole is worth a lot more than 32 IMO. It was a very original movie and well done.
Damnation Alley isn't too bad to go back and watch. It still comes on sometimes. Peppard is fairly cringeworthy with his hideous Southern accent, but you can get through it without ruining your memories.

Ever see Fantastic Planet? That was a pretty cool one. I think there's a story behind how it came to be, some kind of international effort. I wouldn't mind seeing that again. It was a little bit Battlefield Earth IIRC, but not in a bad way.

Urrggh. On a best 50 list, it shouldn't be any higher than #250, even if
there aren't any more than 55 altogether, including anything Ed Wood might
have made (did he survive to the 70s?).

The Black Hole had an amazing score by John Barry. I've not seen the film literally in decades now and I still remember it. I saw the CD online, I've thought about picking it up.

Guys, it's Rolling Stones magazine, the awesome people that glorified the Boston Bomber just to get more sales for their rag. I wouldn't exactly rely too much on their movie recommendations, some of the ones on that list are just terrible wink

The source of the list is irrelevant. It is a list and therefore must be debated and corrected! LOL
I thought The Black Hole was pretty cool. It was also very dark for a Disney movie, especially at that time. I remember that Maximilian robot scared the crap outta me when you saw the eyes in it at the end. It was creepy to begin with, doing the phone book trick through that dude early on. The movie had a great cast, even if it wasn't the performance of their lives.

I was about to mention Saturn 3, but turns out that missed the cut coming out in 1980. That one should be immortalized for getting Farrah topless.

I thought The Black Hole was awful - some interesting designs and decent special effects, but the action of running and flying along outside the space ship, and those stupid clown-like robots, completely destroyed it. That's on top of the horrid dialog, stiff acting and direction, etc.

And now I'll put on my Mr. Pedantic hat. Technically, 1980 IS part of the 1970s - it would go from 1971 through 1980. If someone is giving you $20 and is counting it out in $1 bills, they don't start counting the second $10 until after they've given you the tenth dollar. So it's 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10, then 11-12, etc., so the '70s would technically be 71-72-73-74-75-76-77-78-79-80.
