Searching for a free video capture program, which is not as hungry as FRAPS,
and may saves files less large, and therefor longer videos, I found this -
does anyone use it? Is it really better than FRAPS?
Or can you recommend anything else, that is free or really cheap?

I am using nvidias shadowplay which works well for me. You need an nvidia card to use it and it is included in the "nvidia geforce experience" software (so the software in itself is free).
The reason i like it is because it doesn't save anything until you hit a button and then it saves what just transpired according to your preferences (i have it set up to save the last 20 minutes at highest quality). It can be set up and used as a regular recorder as well, or even stream to Twitch, if you prefer it that way.
When it comes to file size i guess it is reasonable. I just saved a 13:30 long recording (the sortie did not last 20 minutes so that's why the length was cut short) at 1680x1050 and 60fps and the file size was 2.8GB.

Hey, Olham, Shadowplay is free with newer NVidia cards and works quite well, although, if you don't currently have an NVidia card, it would be pretty expensive...

Shadowplay, although it doesn't seem to like 3 monitors wide-screen here.

Failing that I tried a fair few, all with good points and good points.

D3DGear I like a lot.
Fraps always annoyed not just because of lack of options but having to toggle the recording indicator 5 times around each corner of the screen to get rid of it and put it back etc.

Unfo, I have an ATI HD7870. Maybe my next card will be NVidia - some day...

Worth doing Olham if you are into recording games shadowplay is very fast and low on resources (you can also reduce the size of movies more but compression is pretty good.

Since you have an ATI-card it might be worth checking out dxtory. I have heard a lot of good things about it but you will most likely have to tweak it a bit 'cause by default i think it records, more or less, pixel for pixel and the extremely high quality obviously means big file sizes.

Tried Dxtory. Not impressed. No improvement over FRAPS, and needs to be purchased for full functionality.

Likewise!, I am also always looking for alternatives so I don't take FPS hits

I tried D3DGear but the FPS hits were extreme. Dropped to 4 fps from 60 when I ran video capture. Not sure why it would be this bad. It also separates the sound from the video in the output file so you get two files being written to disk.

Seems no one here tried the program the video shows in the first post?

My other form of madness is racing sims, and I have never tired of the much updated and modded Grand Prix Legends, a simulation of the 1967 F1 season that today, thanks to its community, enjoys updated graphics, hundreds of new tracks and complete carsets for the 1965, 1966, and 1969 F1 seasons, plus a 1967 GT mod.

Over at Sim Racing Mirror Zone's GPL forum, I found this post by Jim Pearson, an Australian enthusiast famous for his rendition of the Isle of Man TT track for GPL. I haven't tried video capture and much of it is Greek to me, but it looks worth sharing:

This topic has been covered before, but I thought the options we were all using were far from optimal. The low quality of my UTube videos has always irritated me, because, although I can run GPL smoothly at 1920 X 1080 and at 60 FPS, up to now I have been forced to use an in game resolution of 1024 X 768 and FRAPS capture at only 30 FPS to achieve smooth video capture. Although I am not planning a new video in the foreseeable future, I did spend some time on the net today researching any new software alternatives to FRAPS and came up with this.... http://www.bandicam.com/ and this; http://www.bandicam.com/support/tips/best-codec/ After downloading and some experimentation with the various options, to my great surprise, I can now produce very smooth high quality AVI movies at a constant 60 FPS using full screen capture; i.e. at 1920 X 1080. These are the video capture settings I used. In ADVANCED Tab FPS = 60 FULL SCREEN QUALITY = 80 FILE TYPE = AVI CODEC = H264 NVenc (VBR)* *This Nvenc codec apparently only uses the partitioned part of modern Nvidea graphics cards to process the render, so it doesn't use the CPU for that task. This may be why such efficiency can be achieved as by comparison, both GPL and FRAPS are very CPU intensive I believe. The file sizes also seem reasonable for full screen 60FPS capture [ 800mb for nearly two minutes ] as Bandicam compresses the output as it captures. There is the usual trial free version and the licensed version about $35. Works for me; hope it provides benefit for anyone else willing to try it. Cheers Jim

I never managed to drive those racing cars properly, I must admit.
But the looks of those cars was smashing! The Lotus was my favourite...

OK, I took the test and downloaded bandicam and it is a big improvement in FPS capture in WOFF. I am using AMD vid card. Bandicam allows 60 FPS as opposed to the 30FPS upper limit in FRAPS. I ran a test and then uploaded it through my Corel Video studio Pro X7 and the resolution improvement is great. Here is a link to my YouTube Test vid:

SORRY FOLKS, I inadvertently deleted the vid from YouTube. Will post again when I create a new one
