I played the original RB until my fingers bled, tried RB3D, most every other WW1 sim, and even lost a copy of MSFS3 and OFF, and now I may be looking to get back into WW1 flight simming.

Where do I start with WOFF and what advice in terms of hardware should i know about beforehand?

Fritz

Welcome back at the Western front, mrfritz!
With WOFF, you will invest into a long-time simming pleasure; if you like
good single-player campaigns, you won't find this immersion anywhere else.

I can tell you, that WOFF is runing fine for me with this system:

- Windows 7 (32bit)
- Intel i5 CPU (3200)
- ASUS P8P67 motherboard
- ATI RADEON HD7870 graphic card (2 GB mem)
- 4 GB memory
- Bootdrive (with Programs and WOFF on it): SAMSUNG SSD 80 GB

A fast CPU seems to be most essential, as WOFF will only use one core;
and then comes a decent graphic card and 4 GB mem minimum.

But as dutch said: best you tell us what you have right now.

Here it is:

Intel core 2 quad cpu q9400 @ 2.66ghz
4Gb RAM
32 BIT WINDOWS 7

What about track IR? worth the money?

TrackIR isn't a cheap hardware, but if you want to be put into the cockpit and be
able to look around and up and down like in real life; if you want to experience
a true feeling of WW1 flying, then I say, it's definitely a must-have!

In our "Video department" you should find a lot of stuff to show you how it
appears to be flying with TrackIR.

Your CPU though might be first to change - 2.66 GHz are IMHO to low for WOFF.
Not sure how much your CPU could be safely overclocked, but you should have
at least 3.2 GHz available.
That may bring up another expense: a new motherboard.

TrackIR is as indispensable as your joystick IMHO. Gotta get one.

I buy new stuff every 2 - 3 years to keep up with everything, and I am not at all a wealthy man.
But I think it is necessary to be able to fly modern sims, and I never regreted a single penny.
Especially OFF and WOFF gave me countless immersive hour, and if I had spent them with other
things (cinema, dining out, pizza delivery, drinks, etc.) it would have come far more expensive,
as I know from experience.

It only seems a lot of money, but as I said: worth every penny.

True, have you ever tallied up the hours spent on WOFF and divided by the cost of hardware?
I've thought of doing so, but am not aware of a place that WOFF keeps track of total time flown and I've deleted some pilots along the way.

Based on my math (time x enjoyment x money) WOFF is the cheapest investment on myself I have ever made.

Kind of depends I think and what you want to wring out of WOFF. My previous machine was under spec and still ran WOFF fairly well except in extreme low level combat.
My new machine, bought just for WOFF is a Win 7 Pro 64-bit, 3.6 Intel a/ multiple cores, 16 GB of RAM, and a Nvidia 750Ti with 2 GB. Got a SSD Drive performing cache services. I run everything maxed out WOFF wise and graphic card wise and average 60 FPS pre-1918 and 50-55 in 1918 when things really heat up.
I have been quite happy with it. I'll upgrade the video card when the 4 or 6 GB monsters drop in price a bit.

If you really want "smooth" action, do not forget the new wave of monitors, i.e. G-sync or Free-sync.

They may not give you more FPS, but they smooth out the FPS that you CPU/GPU produces so 40 FPS does not "jerk" as much as it did before just using V-sync.

CPU = i9 11900K
GPU = RTX 3080 Ti
Monitor = ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX 2160p G-sync

By the way, in case you missed it over on the OBD site, here is what OBD says about what is needed to play WOFF:

: Recommended System

To run WOFF at high settings, a good CPU Mhz speed is very recommended. Multi-core will only help speed slightly as it will help only background processes.

Intel 3.5+GHz CPU or higher.

NVidia Graphics card, 670 GTX or above. Card with 2GB VIDEO RAM or more is very recommended.

Equivilant ATI graphics card with 2GB+ RAM is fine too but not in our recommended setup.

PC with WINDOWS 7 64 Bit

8GB RAM or higher

You must also be an Admin user.

: Medium System

To run WOFF at medium settings (for example sliders Terrain and Scenery on 3) on 5-3-3-5-5.

Intel 3.0GHz CPU Speed or higher.

NVidia Graphics card, 650 GTX or above or equivalent. A graphics card with 1.5GB or more is recommended, or equivilant ATI graphics card.

PC with WINDOWS 7 64 Bit, WINDOWS 8 or 8.1 64 Bit

6GB RAM or higher

: Low End System

To run WOFF at LOW settings (for example sliders Terrain and Scenery on 2 or 1)

for example settings on 5-2-2-5-5 (or may require 5-1-1-5-5 - depends on CPU speed/GPU).

Intel 2.6GHz or more CPU (overclocked may help if you are struggling for core speed).

NVidia Graphics card, 560 GTX or above, 640 GTX or above, or equivalent. Card with at least 1GB Video RAM (or equivalent ATI graphics card).

PC with WINDOWS 7 64 Bit, WINDOWS 8 or 8.1 64 Bit

4GB RAM or higher

Although WOFF will usually work on higher specification of Laptop systems, it's not recommended, and some, due to their non-standard nature may have issues . The actual performance speed of laptop components under heavy load and the subsequent throttling due to heat management can be less than satisfactory and very rarely will perform near a desktop PC with similar specifications. See the FAQ if you have a dual video card laptop.

WOFF requires Windows 7 (64 bit) or Windows 8 or 8.1 (64 Bit).

Although Windows XP (32bit), Vista 32, Windows 7 (32 bit) or WIndows 8 (32 bit) may work it has not been tested, not recommended, and therefore not supported officially - we cannot offer help or refunds if you do not use one of the required Operating systems.

WOFF is designed for 64 bit memory access. If you wish to try your WOFF on a 32 bit Operating System it may be possible, customers are running on this but we do not officially support it. Depending on amount of available memory in your system you may need to enable the 3GB switch for the OS to access to more memory. This is a Microsoft feature, we cannot help with this or support this and it may affect other programs.

WINDOWS XP is at 'end of life' i.e. no longer supported or updated even under extended support in APRIL 2014 by Microsoft.

G-sync:

Freesync

I have one of the new ASUS PG278Q G-sync monitors and it really helps when you drop down into the 40 FPS area because it stops "stutters" and "tears" at the same time.

If you haven't sim-flown recently, you really need to check out what something like cockpit shadows do for the experience. Especially in a biplane, it sells the illusion over the top. I look at CFS3 (the original, not the stunning WOFF-whompization of it) and think "I used to think THAT looked cool?!?"

Also, it seems to me that the need to upgrade every 3 years or so is stretching out. My rig is now nearing it's 4th year and I see no performance wall in sight right now. I run a core i7-2600k at 4.5 GHz, a rig I made to run MS FSX, kind of mid-upper end at the time. I have picked up a GTX 770 GPU upgrade. Most of the new tech push these days is towards smart phones & tablets.
