Now that AMD 7nm CPUs are out, Intel performance is behind -- so price competition (rumor):

Quote
Intel 10th Generation ‘Comet Lake’ 14nm+++ CPU Lineup Allegedly Leaks Out, 10 Cores Start at $409 US, 8 Cores at $339 US, 6 Cores at $179 US and 4 Cores at $129 US – New Socket LGA 1159 Rumored

It looks like you won’t be getting any significant changes on the new lineup since it is still technically based on the same [14nm] architecture as Skylake..The 10th Gen lineup makes use of the 14nm+++ node...

The Intel Core i9-10900KF is rumored to be the flagship SKU of the lineup, featuring 10 cores and 20 threads. Based on the price, it will be competing against the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X which offers a total of 12 cores and 24 threads. The chip is clocked at 3.4 GHz base and 5.2 GHz single core boost..

Many articles have noted that some Intel performance has been based on the current (and older) chip hardware "cutting corners" with security. That does not affect gamers (usually). But, some professional users need to install software fixes that cut Intel performance significantly.

In the meantime, gaming Intel fans can benefit from the price competition smile

AMD confirms custom RX 5700 coming in mid-August

Might consider changing future reference blower cooler

AMD has confirmed that custom RX 5700 series graphics cards will be coming in mid-August, and some partners will launch their versions even later.

AMD claims that blower-style cooler was necessary in order to "guarantee performance in every system to match our launch charts", as it should cool down the GPU even in cases without proper airflow.

I ordered my 50th Anniversary edition with an eye on the "guaranteed" stock performance (mild as-delivered OC vs non-Anniversary cards). I'll see how that turns out in the next couple days.

Got my 7nm Navi RX5700XT 50th Anniversary edition.

After reading the above I was expecting noise. Its quiet during normal gaming. Its virtually quiet under heaviest load in a closed gaming case that has audible cooling fans. Not a bother to me. In my system its far quieter than my Powercolor RX Vega 64. The PC Vega 64 is one of the fastest Vega 64s made. Has 3 fans -- can be noisy.

I wanted the RX5700XT 50th to out perform the Vega 64 by 20 percent (and hoped for 25 percent).

In basic Time Spy it was 25 percent faster. In Time Spy 4K it was only 18 percent faster (and far quieter). But, Time Spy is not a game, its a benchmark.

I personally like the Assassin's Creed Odyssey in-game benchmark -- its a low fly over of a graphics intensive part of the game. Its a game I play. I was pleasantly surprised (more like incredulous) when the in-game benchmark ran 32 percent faster at 4K and 115% field of view. So, I get the FPS improvement without the occasional in-game noise.

For completeness, in my heavily modded Fallout 4 worst scene (CPU limited) running at 4K, the FPS increase was small (as expected with a CPU limited scene).

These were preliminary tests. So far, overall, RX5700XT 50th wins for my uses. Other folks may get different results. I'll be interested to see how the numbers change when I'm running in my "new" computer (Ryzen 7 3800X) next week. I'd expect a real game to run even faster (if only slightly) -- maybe that Fallout 4 scene will improve.

AMD Radeon VII is no more

Cowcotland has just confirmed with their sources that AMD Radeon VII is no longer in production. The stores are selling the remaining stock and apparently, no more Radeon VII cards will be made.

With the announcement of Radeon RX 5700 series, it became clear that VII is simply not as power-efficient and cost-effective solution as Navi-based models.

When Radeon VII was released, it was obviously a 7nm "place holder" until Navi.

Meantime, based on how my RX5700XT 50th works, next year's high end gaming Navi could be a beast -- if the shader count reaches 4096 (like Vega 64).

AMD Radeon RX 5700 series reach 2.2 GHz with SPPT mod

Unlocking AMD Radeon RX 5700 series performance has never been easier, thanks to SoftPowerPlayTable mod described by Igor Wallossek from Tom’s Hardware Germany.

During testing, I noticed my RX5700XT 50th was running over 2GHz at times -- at stock settings for the 50th edition.

AMD’s Next-Gen Zen 5 [5nm] Core Shows Up In Chief Architect’s Profile, Post-2020 Chip Architecture For Future Ryzen, Threadripper & EPYC CPUs

The AMD Zen 5 [5nm ]core was confirmed to be in development by AMD a while ago in their slides during the Zen+ launch. It has once again been confirmed by David Suggs, who’s the chief architect for the AMD Zen 2 and Zen 5 microprocessor cores.

[per Suggs] "N5 has entered risk production in the first quarter, and we expect customer tape-outs starting this quarter and volume production ramp in the first half of 2020. With 1.8X logic density and 15% speed gain and an ARM A72 core compared with 7-nanometer, we believe our N5 technology is the most competitive in the industry."

My 7nm Ryzen 7 3800X may be replaced with a 5nm model in a little over a year (speculation). As the article notes, Intel will stay behind if that happens (Intel is said to still be having issues with 10nm and 7nm production).

Confirmation of a previous rumor:

Frank Azor joins AMD as chief architect of gaming solutions

AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, confirmed that Frank Azor is now part of AMD's team..

Frank Azor previously worked at Alienware, as one of the co-founders. .. and is certainly a big win for AMD as he is familiar with the gaming industry.

Patrick Moorhead, Founder, President, and Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, as well as an industry veteran, had nothing but praise for Frank Azor, describing him as "a gaming icon" across the industry, and saying that this is a great move and big win for AMD.

I copied much of the short article -- I don't like to do that. But, unlike most, this article was "to the point". Here's the link:

ASRock Announces First Custom Radeon RX 5700 Challenger Series Graphics Cards – Ditches Reference Blower For Dual Fan Design, Huge Factory Overclock

The ASRock Radeon RX 5700 XT Challenger has 2560 stream processors which are clocked at 1650 MHz base, 1795 MHz Game and 1905 MHz Boost clocks.

Thing is, my RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary has faster stock clocks (1680, 1830, 1930) and is much quieter than the 3 fan cards I've owned. In use, my "AMD GPU tachometer" showed over 2000 MHz at times (stock).

I'm not selling them. But, authors seem to be selling the reference models short.

My new build (Ryzen 7 3800X, RX 5700XT 50th, Gigabyte 570X mb) is virtually done. I'm testing and test gaming. More "upside" than I expected, so far.

Chart price is $50 higher than current list price.

Intel cannot catch up with AMD until 2021

Chipzilla has admitted that it will not catch up with AMD on its 7nm chips until 2021.

[Intel CEO Bob Swan says] “We'll get our 10nm node out this year. Our 7nm node will be out in two years and it will be a 2.0X scaling so back to the historical Moore's Law curve.”

FWIW changed signature to show new hardware. Intended to be a good (not great), middle-of-the-road 4K gaming system.

New system primarily RX5700XT 50th Anniversary model GPU (at stock speeds), Ryzen 7 3800X (at stock speeds), X570 motherboard. Old system primarily RX Vega 64 (at stock speeds), Ryzen 7 1800X (overclocked), X470 motherboard.

X570 motherboard correctly installed my 32GB of memory at 3.2GHz -- memory designed for Intel that only ran at 3.0GHz on X470.

Averaging/rounding test results, the new system is roughly 25% faster FPS Benchmarking and 20% faster CPU Benchmarking. According to 3DMark Time Spy Benchmark, the system exceeds the minimum 4K system/requirement by over 30%. This only applies to my uses and may not be true for everyone making a similar switch.

Relevant to gamers who build their own computers. May result in slightly more AMD and Intel CPU sales than otherwise would happen.

There are already shedloads of DRAM in the supply chain and prices are pretty low already. That oversupply is expected to continue into the first and second quarters of the next calendar year.

AMD Claims It Bluffed Nvidia Into Cutting GPU Prices

AMD carefully analyzed the RTX family of GPUs, including their price points, die sizes, and how much headroom was left in the family. It picked its initial price points for the RX series expecting Nvidia to undercut them..

[Author] I believe everything AMD has said about analyzing Turing’s headroom, price points, and other market factors. We perform similar analyses ourselves,..

Nvidia has maintained very high margins on its GPUs; the company-wide margin as of last year was ~60 percent.

The End of High-Performance Overclocking May Be Nigh

"As both AMD and Intel optimize their binning process more and more, overclocking will not be possible as CPUs will boost themselves on their own to the highest clocks possible."

Where’s the [OC] Headroom Going?

Today, modern top-end chips target 4.6 – 5GHz for their own all-core boost frequencies and leave very little room for overclockers to go anywhere else.

Article

Prior to reading the article, I noticed that my Ryzen 7 3800X advertises 3.9GHz base operating frequency, 4.5GHz single core boost. But, in a Stress Test running all 16 threads at 100%, it actually runs at ~4.3GHz base on all 8 cores with boosts to ~4.5GHz occasionally. Wattage remains below 100W which is below the advertised 105W.

It does not overheat (water cooled) and probably can run like this indefinitely (based on my limited tests).

It does the same when using the included Wraith air cooler but runs about 10C warmer; so, I would not try to run indefinitely on air.

Hence, I've decided not to overclock (as I did with Ryzen 7 1800X) because its not necessary for my uses. My 3800X overclocks itself automatically -- just like the article says.

Nvidia expects first [full] ray-tracing game by 2023

Morgan McGuire, who works on ray tracing, augmented reality, virtual reality at .. Nvidia, is predicting that by 2023 we will see the first triple-A games will require ray tracing.

"I predict that the first AAA game to REQUIRE a ray-tracing GPU to run will ship in 2023, and every gaming platform will offer accelerated ray-tracing by that year."

Part of the problem is that graphics hardware would have to make a giant leap before we see a fully ray-traced game in the triple-A category.

Both the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett (the next flagship Xbox console) will run an AMD Navi GPU that supports ray tracing [expected in 2020].

Others have suggested Full Ray Tracing will take 10 years -- and/or cards 10 times as powerful as now available. Currently, for just a few effects in a game, the resolution and FPS hit is enormous. Moreover, there are other clever ways to get most of the Ray Tracing effect without all the performance hit. Maybe he didn't really mean "full" ray tracing in the sense of every light ray. We'll have to wait and see how 2023 turns out.

Full Ray Tracing will be practical someday. Currently, the limited ray tracing is just for the fun of trying it.

AMD CEO Confirms 7nm High-End Navi Radeon RX GPUs and 7nm Mobility Ryzen CPUs – Aimed at High-Performance Gaming PCs and Notebooks

Lisa Su [AMD CEO]

“You should expect that our execution on those are on track and we have a rich 7-nanometer portfolio beyond the products that we have currently announced in the upcoming quarters.”

two variants are in the works, Navi 12 which is supposedly the high-end design and Navi 14 that will serve the lower-end market. It is also said that Navi 12 could feature up to 4096 SPs that would suggest a 64 CU design compared to 40 CUs on the Navi 10 GPU

Based on the performance of my RX5800XT 50th, I expect a 4096 shader Navi 12 will be "way up there" in performance. I'm guessing they will be likely to compete with Nvidia's current highest end cards.

AMD Ryzen CPU Gain A Mammoth Market Share Versus Intel’s Core Lineup – Ryzen 3000 Outselling Intel 4 to 1, Ryzen 7 3700X Sales Eat Up Intel’s Entire Lineup

Based on the figures from Germany’s biggest retail outlet, the report shows that AMD while consistently topping Intel for an entire year has now surpassed them with an unimaginable and record share.

Running down the sales figures in details, AMD’s recorded share of CPU sold at 79% was even bigger than the first generation Ryzen and second-generation Ryzen launch. Of the AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs sold, the Ryzen 7 3700X was the most popular and the chip alone sold almost as much as Intel’s entire Core lineup.

When it comes to revenue from the sales, AMD managed to grab the most share at 75% while Intel had a 25% share in July.

This information is from one large retailer in Germany. Its not based on World data.
