Intel is having a sweepstakes to give away i7-8086 CPUs. However:

Quote
AMD Will Trade Your Intel Core i7-8086 Win For A 16-Core 1950X Threadripper

..if you are one of the lucky winners that get a Core i7-8086 from the Intel Sweepstakes – AMD is giving you a choice to trade that in for a much more powerful CPU..

..it is only valid for the first 40 trades (Intel will be giving away 8086, Intel Core i7-8086 CPUs)..

As a practical matter, this is unlikely to affect any of us. But, its a cute marketing stunt.

Competition is good smile

The reason why AMD's Vega power was high

Power optimization engineers went to EPYC

It is no big secret that Vega 64 and 56 had quite high thermals and didn’t actually meet some of its performance targets. Some key power optimization engineers were pulled from the Vega team to the more important goal. The Naples server chip had a higher priority.

The server, chip now known as EPYC had more priority for long-term performance and the survival of AMD and we definitely agree with this assessment. But since AMD doesn’t have a lot of talented engineers sitting around, moving some people from one group to another could affect the end result.

Taking key talents from GPU and moving them to the server business meant that EPYC has some impressive power to performance ratios but at the same time Vega didn’t.

At least now it makes a bit more sense.

This article has the same theme as a previous post n the thread. AMD put the effort where the money was to be made. And succeeded in catching up to Intel CPUs -- at the cost of allowing Nvidia GPUs to be uncontested at the very highest end.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X Flagship 32 Core, 64 Thread 4.00 GHz CPU Detailed and Benchmarked – Overclocks Up To 4.12 GHz Across All Cores on High-End Corsair AIO Liquid Cooler

The chip, which will be based on the 12nm FinFET process will be part of the 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper lineup that launches in Q3 2018.

AMD 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper 2990X CPU Specifications, Performance and Overclock Potential Detailed, Disrupts Intel’s 28 Core 5 GHz Computex Demo

The chip will rock 32 cores and 64 threads which eclipses Intel’s Halo product which will sport only 28 cores and 56 threads. The chip tested was a B2 stepping with a base clock of 3.4 GHz and a maximum boost clock of 4.0 GHz while the precision boost overdrive clocks are rated at +200 MHz so expect up to 4.20 GHz in single core optimized workloads. This shows that AMD can still achieve very high clock speeds even when they jumped to twice as many cores as their previous flagship, the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X.

we have confirmation of at least two processors in the 2nd Gen Threadripper family which will include:

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X 32 Core/64 Thread
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970X 24 Core/48 Thread

AMD also stated that they are preparing new coolers for the Ryzen Threadripper 2nd generation processors.

Unfortunately, there's no way I can use 32 cores effectively -- wish I could -- so I could rationalize buying one of these 32 core wonders.

As many articles have pointed out, Intel's 5GHz tests of its 28 core unit were unrealistic (to be polite). The Intel CPU will run a lot slower than that. So, AMD wins the "highest core count" performance crown -- today. Also, the predicted AMD price is much lower than the Intel price. AMD should win "bang per buck" also.

Competition is good smile Unfortunately, AMD had to choose between competing in CPUs and GPUs at this time -- they picked CPUs. I imagine GPUs and the Nvidia competition are next. But the rumor is AMD will compete mostly at the GPU prime price point -- rather than the highest end price and performance point. We'll see.

Good news for Nvidia fans. Nvidia is WAY oversupplied with GPU chips. So Nvidia GPU prices should plummet. I wondered why they were falling so fast (GTX1080 down to $500 -- with a free game included)

One of NVIDIA’s Major OEM Partners Allegedely Returned 300,000 GPUs, Major Inventory Issues Being Cited For Next-Gen GeForce Launch Delay

"Reports out of Taiwan now suggest that Nvidia has a gaming GPU inventory problem.

‘Semiaccurate’ reported on the issue yesterday, and cited excess inventory in the channel as the primary reason for new gaming GPU delay.

The glut is so severe that one top Asian OEM partner reportedly returned 300k GPUs to Nvidia."

..the issue is that they have actually manufactured an inventory [of completed cards] which they cannot manage now.

We are talking about prices that reached over $2000 US for the Radeon RX Vega 64 and the GeForce GTX 1080 which retailed for $699 at launch

Article

UPDATE: A different article says Nvidia will be charging artificially high prices for the top of its new generation -- speculating it comes out in the second half of this year. A result of no competition at the high end from AMD.

Breaking: Supreme Court Rules States Can Tax All Internet Sales

Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to reverse a 1992 ruling that mandated states could only tax e-commerce if the retailer in question has a physical presence in the state. So if popular computer hardware vendor, Newegg, did not have a warehouse or hub in your state, you could buy a video card and pay only for the product and shipping costs.

All that is soon to change as today’s landmark reversal gives states the authority to start demanding their fair share of internet sales tax.

Quote
We fought the American Revolution in large part to oppose the very idea of taxation without representation. Today, the Supreme Court announced, 'oops' governments can now tax those outside their borders—those who have no political power, no vote, no voice."

In my view, the USA Constitution as originally written and intended did not allow taxation across State borders. A 5-4 Supreme Court vote nearly always means the strict constitutionalists (we have 4) voted against and the 4 who don't give a darn about the Constitution voted for -- and our resident swing voter voted yes. The correct vote was NO -- as it was in 1992 when we were less corrupt. Then the correct procedure would have Congress change the law and amend the Constitution accordingly -- if people really wanted this change. Of course, it was politically unviable to do that.

Thing is, although technology changes, people are people -- now, 300 years ago and 3000 years ago. The historians over all that time (starting 3500 years ago) have noted that the corrupted politicians want control. They always go about getting it the same way (Socialism). However, folks are not taught (in school) about how things were long ago -- and how badly it always turned out. So, they don't get it.

It starts small -- with seemingly fair but unconstitutional changes. Later, in a couple decades, things get decidedly less beneficial. Always has worked this way and always will. I won't be alive to see this particular "fall" (towards a clever, under=the-table dictatorship -- for the good of the wealthy few).

Oh well, GPUs and CPUs will now cost more on average due to "border crossing'" state taxes. Thus, people will have less to spend on actual products -- and companies that sell via the internet will lose a small amount of business (in the USA).

AMD 7nm is definitely coming soon to industry -- 2H 2018 -- I assume closer to end of half. We just need to know when its coming for gamers. Maybe not as soon.

TSMC Begins Mass Production of 7nm Process, AMD Vega 7nm Confirmed, Zen 2 CPUs Expected Too – Production Capacity To Increase By 3 Times Next Year

AMD 7nm Vega and 7nm Zen 2 CPUs Orders Received by TSMC, 7nm Mass Production Officially Begins

TSMC has officially begun mass production of their 7nm node at their Fab 15. It is stated that TSMC has already confirmed the production of AMD 7nm GPUs that are part of their Radeon Instinct and Radeon Pro lineups, expected to hit market availability in 2H 2018.

TSMC is expecting to win orders for AMD CPUs too. The only CPU that AMD has in their pipeline and uses 7nm process is the upcoming Zen 2 architecture which will be a big leap for the company in terms of performance and efficiency.

"Compared to its 10nm FinFET process, TSMC’s 7nm FinFET features 1.6X logic density, ~20% speed improvement, and ~40% power reduction. TSMC set another industry record by launching two separate 7nm FinFET tracks: one optimized for mobile applications, the other for high-performance computing applications". via TMSC

Nvidia GTX 1080 on sale for $480 today -- a couple more for $500.

My Powercolor Vega 64 is still $580.

So, Nvidia GPU prices continue to drop. They have a lot of excess inventory to sell. Good news for someone needing a good card today at a good price today smile

The GTX 1080Ti is $720 and up today. A good price compared to the Vega 64 (I like my Vega 64 smile ). But, no doubt, GTX1080 is all one needs (runs like a Vega 64). So, price is becoming a factor in picking between 1080 and 1080Ti.

Seems like cryptocurrency mining is no longer an issue for Nvidia. It may still be affecting AMD prices slightly.

AMD Adding HDR To Freesync 2 Rebrand Now Titled FreeSync 2 HDR and Increases Minimum HDR Requirement

they have gone the route of renaming the technology to FreeSync 2 HDR conveys the focus on the new feature-set: LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) and the FreeSync 2 HDR fast-lane for tone-mapping improvements.

AMD FreeSync 2 HDR Supports At Least HDR600 And More

..clarified on what specifications are required for a monitor to receive FreeSync 2 HDR certification: support for at least HDR600, coverage of 99 percent of BT.709 and 90 percent of the DCI P3 color spectrum. Also mentioned that there was a minimum response time,

The foregoing are minimums for a monitor to be certified as "FreeSync 2 HDR". A given monitor make and model may do better.

Samsung Can Double Their HBM2 Manufacturing Capacity But Supply Issues Would Still Persist as Demand Exceeds Production

The Samsung developed HBM2 which is known as Aquabolt is the fastest spec’d memory solution to date with a capacity of 8GB per stack and up to 307 GB/s of bandwidth per stack..

Now, this is an issue for professional and high-end graphics cards such as AMD Vega and NVIDIA Volta lineup which currently only uses HBM2 memory but DRAM makers, including Samsung are working on the next best thing for consumer grade graphics cards known as GDDR6.

Currently, RX Vega 64 performs equivalently or slightly better than GTX 1080 in games -- but, it costs about $80 more today.

Among the reasons Vega costs more is HBM2 memory cost -- which is going to stay high for a while. AMD did not have that in mind when they decided to use HBM2 in RX Vega. Since AMD deliberately tries to win "bang per buck", maybe they will use GDDR6 in some new cards next year (that would have been HBM2).

Also, while commenting on reasons for the cost difference, the AMD Vega GPU chips (both Vega 64 & 56) have nearly twice as many transistors as GTX1080. Those extra transistors along with HBM2 give Vega an advantage in money-making "compute" activities -- so, cryptocurrency miners drove up the price.

As noted above in this thread, Nvidia has too many chips on hand which is driving the cost of Nvidia GPUs way down. Exception, GTX 1080 TI cost is staying relatively high -- possibly because it has no direct gaming competition. No competition is no good (to twist a phrase often used in this thread).

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X listed for 1509 EUR

The 32-core HEDT CPU coming to the TR4 platform is about to shake the industry, which has remained in core-stagnation for years.

32 cores/64 threads at 3.4GHz base frequency. Normally, for a given high-core-count part, the high end AMD CPU product has higher base clocks than the equivalent Intel CPU.

CPU core count is the future (where have I read that before?) -- 32 cores is arriving a bit faster than even I thought it would. AMD will deliver competitive cores at the best "bang per buck" -- low relative cost is part of the AMD "game plan".

Now that the cores are available, more and more software that needs to run fast will begin to use lots of threads -- e.g. high-end games. Still, I expect it to be a few years before 32 cores are an expected feature of high-end gaming rigs.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X 32 Core, 64 Thread Behemoth X399 HEDT CPU To Cost Around $1500 US – Listed By Retailer, Wrecks the i9-7980XE in Price Per Core, Price Per Performance Metrics

t looks like the first listing of AMD’s upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 2990X HEDT processor has just appeared and found out by Videocardz. AMD already upped the ante when the announced a 32 core, 64 thread behemoth processor against Intel’s new HEDT which would pack 28 cores but they are going to take it one step ahead by offering that many cores for less than Intel’s current flagship which packs only 18 cores.

It was reported earlier that the AMD game plan was to catch Intel first. Then, try to catch Nvidia later. Because they could not afford to do both at the same time.

I don't necessarily agree with that. Software coded for multiple threads in a lot of cases can't just automatically utilise a lower CPU/thread count and in some cases it just wouldn't work at all. Game devs will always use the lowest common denominator so whilst true optimisation of quad/octa core chips may become norm over time I can only ever see a gradual increase with regards increased cpu core counts or an alignment with the current batch of consoles at any moment in time.

NVIDIA invites journalists for Gamescom

Gamescom starts on August 21st. It’s a few-day event focusing on new gaming titles. We have been told NVIDIA is *allegedly* sending invitations to the press

AMD has an event too

What we did hear is that it takes place a month earlier.

Rumors. Probably true. Some think Nvidia will talk about the next generation. No solid information on AMD's presentation.

NVIDIA Launching Next-Generation Graphics Cards At Gamescom 2018

initial shipment will be limited to few hundred chips (on the lower side).. we see retailers like Amazon pumping up the MSRP to cater to the huge demand. ..

..we did hear that you can expect double-digit performance increase over the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti..

The article implies insider information. Double digit can mean 10 percent or 99 percent or seomething in between -- the implication of the article was towards the lower number.

The first ASUS AREZ branded graphics card which is the lineup dedicated to the AMD Radeon RX series has been listed and available for sale. The ASUS AREZ brand was formed after the major controversy regarding NVIDIA’s GPP (GeForce Prime Program) which has since been canceled by NVIDIA themselves.

Very similar specifications and physical appearance to my Powercolor RX Vega 64 (currently $580 with free FarCry 5). The news is not the new card, it is the brand name change to AREZ.

Newegg now has a good selection of GTX 1080 for $500 to $540. 1080Ti models are $750 and up. 1080 sale prices continue a slow slide down.

Amazon has a highest-end ASUS RX Vega 64 for $600 (STRIX-RXVEGA64-O8G-GAMING). Meantime, the few Newegg RX Vega 64s are all $700 and up {when I checked}. RX Vega sale prices are stable to rising slightly.

Rumors with a capital "R" of upcoming AMD Gaming GPUs -- based on a very unofficial source that has been right before. Long article with only three real points.

AMD GPU Rumors: Polaris 30 12nm GPUs in Q4 2018, Navi GPU Based Mid-Range Cards Arrive Before High-End HBM2 Variants

Which rumor is most likely to be true?

AMD 12nm Polaris 30 Radeon RX GPUs (Q4 2018)
AMD 7nm Vega 20 Radeon RX GPUs (Q1 2019)
AMD 7nm Navi Mid-Range Radeon RX GPUs (2019-2020)

To repeat an earlier rumor, the 7nm Navi will perform like an RX Vega 64 but be priced like an RX580 ($250 was the guess).

An interesting Intel rumor from a normally reliable source (based on over a decade of me paying attention to the author). The source says its not a rumor; however, the details are behind a paywall (and I have not paid).

Intel Custom Foundry’s 10nm meltdown is crushing a $20+B market cap tech giant

Exclusive: This is the beginning of a far reaching story

As you know Intel’s 10nm process is now years delayed, is not economically or technically viable, and is unlikely to ever work financially speaking based on what SemiAccurate understands of the problems Intel is still trying to fix. The customer in question put their entire upcoming line of chips at Intel on 10nm, and Intel failed. There was no Plan B..

I know there have been major delays in Intel 10nm. Even so, just based on Intel's good reputation, I'm expecting an Intel 10nm Consumer CPU with excellent performance for gaming. However, the article implies that some business may be directed away from Intel due to the reported situation. So, AMD may (or may not) get more business in the future -- which will give it a few more dollars to compete with.

First benchmarks of AMD Ryzen 3 2300X have been leaked

..The Ryzen 3 2300X and other rumored SKUs, such as Ryzen 5 2500X, are coming, as indicated by the leak over at Chiphell.

..The CPU in question allegedly boosts up to 4.2 GHz, and even up to 4.315 GHz when overclocked ..

This quad-core, 65W TDP processor is aiming to replace Ryzen 3 1300X CPU, currently available for 125 USD

The selling price is not yet public. The selling price would have to be real low to cause me to bypass the very similar Ryzen 3 2200G -- which has a valuable Vega GPU (worth about $80 at today's GPU prices) built in and is selling for only $96 today ($99 list).. As previously noted, I have the Ryxen 5 2400G in one of my HTPC -- tested it for lite gaming (RPG & two flight simulations) -- it works at 1080p normal settings (FPS low, but usable) -- $159 today.
