AMD Sampling 7nm Zen 2 CPU This Year, Intel Delays 10nm Again
AMD Ramping up 7nm CPUs and GPUs for 2019
CEO Dr. Lisa Su revealed that the company is going to sample a 7nm server CPU later this year.
Big blue [Intel] revealed in its earnings call yesterday that it has delayed its 10nm process yet again [originally promised for 2015] and now expects to begin rolling out 10nm based products some time next year [2019]. .
Intel’s 10nm is [speculated to be] comparable in terms of specifications to 7nm nodes from TSMC, Samsung & Gloablfoundries. But, [the above news] still means that we’re going to see Intel lose its process edge to the remainder of the industry for the very first time in decades.
..this is going to create a new paradigm where the chip giant will have to rely primarily on design ingenuity and not its process lead to compete..
Which is perhaps why we’ve seen Intel go into a frenzy of talent poaching as of late..
With a re-invigorated Intel, a resurgent AMD, and a steadfast NVIDIA, we’re witnessing the beginning of a new chapter in the pages of PC history
One thing I've predicted for years is that all the chip manufacturers would become equal at around 3nm to 7nm node size -- because that's close to the limit of "silicon". At that point, progress will be based on design ingenuity. We're fast approaching that point.
I also predicted that if AMD could "survive" until the 3nm to 7nm region, the stress on AMD would greatly abate -- because AMD would be virtually guaranteed to be "competitive" and competitors (primarily Intel, Nvidia) could not suddenly jump way ahead. This seems to be happening.

Video card supply is about to improve
Large mining operations stall buying
It is starting to look like there will be more GPUs in the marketplace as Bitcoin and Etherum are losing some of its momentum, and large mining operations are holding their investment in GPUs until dedicated mining cards ASICs are out..
VentureBeat has noticed that the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 video card is selling on Amazon right now for $700. Other retailers even have it listed at the original MSRP of $600.
Original MSRP ain't bad. Since AMD makes more effective mining cards for the money spent, I expect AMD GPU prices to fall slightly slower than Nvidia prices.
Yes, but... The information is so vague, that its not worth discussing.
Example, they don't know the clock rates for sure. Example, they don't know if this is a gaming card or commercial card.
The good news is that testing on AMD 7nm GPUs is that far along. Gives something to look forward to as cryptocurrency mining slumps and GPU prices fall back to normal retail prices.

Windows 10 RS4 April update launches [Yesterday]
The April Update or the Windows Version 1803 is launching today, 30 April, ahead of May Day. It was supposed to launch earlier but had a rather severe bug which delayed things..
Performance wise, my Ryzen 7 1800X at 4.0GHz performance changed slightly. Single core measured the same. Multi-core was down roughly 1 percent. Other folks CPUs might behave differently.
Presumably, Windows 10 now does more good things and uses more CPU power in the background. Or, maybe its just slightly slower. Otherwise, it installed fairly quickly and has had no issues yet.

Intel Discontinues Kaby Lake-X Quad Cores After a Mere 11 Months Since Release – EOL Plan Announced, Poor Sales and Enthusiast Response Sighted As Reason
The thrust of the foregoing article is that Quad-core is dead among enthusiasts (still good for budget systems -- if the price is right). Kind of like this thread predicted a year ago when 8 core Ryzen hit the store shelves. These days, its about core count and bang per buck -- not single core boost frequency (an opinion).
Also, as previously mentioned, compare the "base frequency" of high core count CPUs from Intel and AMD. Base frequency is what they reliably run on all cores for long periods -- boost frequencies are short term deals for one or two cores on both AMD and Intel unless one provides cooling and overclocks (my 3 overclocked Ryzens run at or slightly above Boost Frequency on all cores all the time -- Ryzen 1800X, 1600X, 2400G -- some unlocked Intel CPUs also run near boost if cooled and OCd).

AMD CPU Market Share Jumps 43% in April Alone, Steam Survey Shows – But Did it Really?
The [Steam] survey figures have tended to especially under-report AMD hardware, both on the CPU and GPU sides. Often times by a very significant margin..
Steam survey has also been wildly inconsistent in many regards, except in its ability to significantly under-report AMD hardware. There have been a lot of theories and speculation as to why that is..
The jump for AMD we’re seeing in April is likely the result of an improvement to Steam’s ability to detect AMD processors, rather than a massive and sudden share gain...
Interesting that Steam has routinely under-reported AMD use by Gamers. I always believed the Steam Intel/Nvidia vs AMD numbers -- dummy me. At least, they may be "un-stacking" the deck now.
AMD sales has not caught up. Intel/Nvidia remain on top, sales wise. I expect things to remain that way for at least a few years. Intel/Nvidia make great products (no one is wrong to buy them) -- but, so does AMD, and traditionally AMD gives more practical performance for one's Dollar, Euro, etc (currently GPUs still ridiculous). I expect the Intel/Nvidia lead to shrink over time, if properly reported.
For those making near term to winter buying plans, the article has fairly good overview of new motherboard chipsets coming from AMD and Intel during that time

STEAM HARDWARE SURVEY FIX
..many cyber cafes manage their hardware in a way that was causing their customers to be over counted...
It took us some time to root-cause the problem and deploy a fix, but we are confident that, as of April 2018, the Steam Hardware Survey is no longer over counting users.

NVIDIA ends GeForce Partner Program
A lot has been said recently about our GeForce Partner Program. The rumors, conjecture and mistruths go far beyond its intent. Rather than battling misinformation, we have decided to cancel the program.
GPP had a simple goal – ensuring that gamers know what they are buying and can make a clear choice..

AMD Vega 20 & Vega 12 GPUs Leaked – Vega 20 Features Support for Intrinsic AI Instructions
The patch confirms AMD’s previous announcements and claims about a 7nm Vega chip tailored for the highly lucrative machine learning and AI markets. The patch also confirms that the 7nm chip in question, while never mentioned by name by the company, is in fact Vega 20..
Vega 20 is designed to deliver 8 times the double precision compute performance. It also features double the memory interface width and it features support for up to 4 HBM2 stacks.
This allows it to be equipped with up to 32GB of HBM2 vRAM, and have access to a whopping 1TB/s of bandwidth.
..very little is known about Vega 12 (GFX904) other than the fact that it exists.

AMD Threadripper 2 is Coming in August – Here’s Everything We Know
The Ryzen Threadripper 2000 series is set to launch this upcoming August alongside a collection of new TR4 socket motherboards. ... Some [reports] indicate that the X399 chipset could get an X499 replacement, whilst most reports indicate Threadripper 2 will see the release of a new set of motherboards on the current X399 chipset.
Threadripper 2 will get the same Zen+ 12nm treatment we’ve seen with the Ryzen 2000 series. That means average clock speeds up to 300 MHz higher than 1st gen Threadripper in highly multi-threaded workloads..
..we can expect a Ryzen Threadripper 2950X to hit a core clock of 3.7 GHz+ and a Turbo of 4.35 GHz+. Better overclocking potential also goes without saying..
..cache latency improvements that Zen+ introduces Threadripper 2000 series should put on a good show of performance, especially in games..
Zen+ also means support for significantly faster DDR4 RAM speeds thanks to a drastic improvement to the memory controller.

Buffett blasts Bitcoin
Rat poison "squared"
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has lashed out at cryptocurrencies and dubbed Bitcoin "rat poison squared".
Buffet claimed that Bitcoin creates a rising price, creates more buyers. If you don’t understand it, you get much more excited. "People like to speculate, they like to gamble.”
"Bitcoin is creating nothing. When you're buying nonproductive assets, all you're counting on is the next person is going to pay you more because they're even more excited about another next person coming along."
He said it was a bit like "tulip mania"..it is reported that a single tulip bulb could be sold for roughly 10 times the annual salary of a skilled craftsman.
Bitcoin mining profitability is up 20 percent over the last month -- a small bounce back after the recent fall. However, mining difficulty is also steadily rising -- difficulty doubled since the new year began.
AMD GPU prices very slowly falling -- but high. For example, AMD Polaris RX580 currently runs in the $300+ range (one RX580 4G on sale today for $280). Last Black Friday, a friend got an RX580 8G on sale for about $190. Hopefully, things will be back to normal by next Black Friday.

Nvidia fans and those needing a GPU may have cause to celebrate. Interesting Nvidia article. Says prices are MSRP if bought directly from Nvidia site. Its due to a deliberate effort to bypass cryptocurrency mining (which seems to be going dead).

Why crypto mining wasn't the only culprit for wild GPU prices
Looking back at the great graphics card shortage
Graphics card prices have been falling back to 'normal' over the past month, and the end of the GPU shortage is finally in sight. But why did we have a shortage in the first place, and are we really out of the woods—and what's going to happen with the next generation of graphics cards, due in the August/September time frame?
A long article listing several possible reasons GPU prices were high. But, noting they are coming down. It may be an interesting read for someone interested in the causes of high prices.
Thing is, the article speculates prices will not get back to the old list prices -- because, due to high memory costs, they cost $50 to $100 more to make, and will be priced $100 to $200 more to compensate. The author is using educated guesstimates of memory costs and markups.
The article questions if the next release of AMD and Nvidia GPUs will have high enough FPS to justify their costs. He notes Nvidia is close to the next gaming-GPU release, and AMD is not saying much about AMDs next gaming release (until June).
I am holding out for an AMD GPU much better than I have for list price or less -- it must give bang per buck relative to my current card. The article indicates I may have to wait a while. But, the article is educated speculation (not verified fact). So, we'll see.

Our local MicroCenter store is having some "sale" prices on custom Nvidia cards. Evidence of the GPU price drop.
I assume prices will drop further. Nvidia is selling the reference model directly for the same or a bit less as noted above.
I assume AMD will drop slower because "dollar for dollar" they are better mining cards and in shorter supply. However, the cheapest RX580 I've seen is closing in on the GTX1060 pricing.
