More cyptocurrency mining news:

Quote
AMD and Nvidia to suffer from increased competition

Susquehanna Financial has warned that AMD and Nvidia are about to lose a big chunk of the cash that they have been making from crypto-miners.

Susquehanna’s Christopher Rolland said that the mining hardware manufacturer Bitmain had developed an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip to mine the cryptocurrency Ether — and an ASIC from Bitmain could pose new competition for AMD’s and Nvidia’s graphics-processing units (GPUs).

Ether mining-related sales accounted for about 20 percent of AMD’s sales and 10 percent of Nvidia’s revenue.

Apparently, Monero is not that happy, and an emergency software upgrade set for April is explicitly meant to change the rules of the system to block the effort entirely, rendering the Antminer X3 ineffective. To keep hardware manufacturers from catching up, these algorithm edits are planned to continue with bi-annual network upgrades.

According to the article, Etherium alone (1 of the most popular of 1000+ cryptocurrencies) accounted for 10 to 20 percent of AMD/Nvidia profit. dizzy

So, now, hardware manufacturers try to make cryptocurrency mining more cost effective -- and, the cryptocurrency algorithm writers try to make mining less cost effective (thereby keeping GPU prices high for we gamers).

The HD550 HTPC card I bought in January for $99 (and only worth $70), is now $169. $169 is the price of a Ryzen 5 2400G APU that contains a 4C/8T CPU that runs at 4GHz (in my case) and has a built in GPU about equal to the, now, $169 HD550 GPU.

If one is building a new cost conscious HTPC/light-gaming-rig, its a no brainer -- put together a Ryzen 5 2400G system. thumbsup

NVIDIA Titan V Reportedly Producing Errors in Scientific Simulations

NVIDIA’s prosumer oriented $3000 GTX Titan V reportedly suffers from a memory bug that’s causing it to produce erroneous results in scientific simulation workloads.

It’s thought that this issue is due to a memory design flaw. According to an unnamed industry veteran that has spoken with The Register, NVIDIA may be pushing the Titan V hardware to its limits, or perhaps even beyond the edge.

Both AMD and Nvidia have problems from time to time -- neither is perfect (nor is Intel).

Its April 1.

The "April Fools" articles are in circulation. One had me for about 15 seconds. Excuse: Its early in the morning here, my eyes barely open smile

The easy way out is to trust nothing today.

Regarding the competition - Intel:

Quote
Apple’s ‘Project Kalamata’ For Custom Mac Processors Will Not Impact Intel Significantly As Macs Only Make For 5% Of Latter’s Revenues According To Barclays

..Apple will switch away from Intel’s chips on Macs by the year 2020..

..Mac sales make up for only 5% of Intel’s overall revenue – not a very significant chunk..

If Apple were to design and build processors from the ground up, its entire ecosystem for the Mac will either have to be re-written for the new silicon; or it’ll have to use Intel emulation..

A very "Intel friendly" article. Losing 5% of their processor business is big -- not small (the article itself says the loss will be $3 Billion a year -- seems like lots of well paying jobs).

However, we'll see if the article is accurate in a couple years. Regardless, Intel will stay #1 in CPU sales (unless the upcoming AMD 7nm CPU node hits a "home run" -- I'm expecting a "double").

Regarding AMD's 7nm node efforts:

AMD 7nm Vega 20 AI GPU Leaked in Linux Patch

AMD’s next generation Vega 20 GPU, designed for AI and machine learning, has just popped up in a Linux patch a couple of days ago. The Sunnyvale California based chip maker announced earlier this year at CES that it’s building a new Vega chip on cutting edge 7nm process technology to be deployed in deep neural networks for AI and machine learning applications by the end of the year. AMD announced that it will begin sampling 7nm Vega in Q4 2018.

So AMD 7nm is real. This is a GPU. The CPUs are also in the works. There is a real chance AMD desktop CPUs will beat Intel CPUs to 7nm. But, we'll see -- its conjecture as to when the CPUs will be on the market.

First PlayStation 5 Rumors Point To 8-Core Zen CPU and Navi GPU; Lots of Devkits Already Out

..PlayStation 5 should feature an APU composed of an 8-Core Zen CPU and a Navi-based GPU – both customized, as usual with consoles. We don’t know much about Navi yet, but AMD has previously linked its name to “Scalability” and “Nextgen Memory”.

..a large amount of development kits has been already sent to game developers...

The rumor is said to be based on solid insider information. But still a rumor (at least, this was not published April 1). A 2019/2020 launch date is speculated.

8 core AMD APU with Ryzen-style CPU and Navi GPU would be cutting edge in a console -- or anything else, for that matter.

Cores and threads are the near-future of gaming -- so one will need to check the "base frequency" of a CPU they are buying (maximum "boost frequency" is for shorter times on one or two cores -- unless one overclocks).

NVIDIA & AMD GPU Prices Begin to Normalize, Down ~25% in March

After a long and arduous period of extreme shortage in the graphics card market affecting both AMD and NVIDIA, it appears that supply is finally beginning to normalize.

Over the month of March alone, we saw prices come down by as much as a third on high-end graphics cards, such as NVIDIA’s GTX 1080 Ti and AMD’s RX Vega 64.

Supply levels have also seemingly gotten healthier.

[The Reason] The improvement in supplies seems to partially stem from news of the imminent release of the first ever ASIC miner for Ethereum, which would render mining Ethereum on GPUs almost entirely obsolete. Ethereum is the most popular cryptocurrency among GPU miners.

Article with Price vs Time Charts

Prices still high. But, maybe I won't have to wait until next year for a higher end GPU. We'll see.

Based on information in above post, I checked Bitcoin profitability. Its way down. Other cryptocurrencies are following similar path. If this keeps up a two or three more months, we gamers may be getting back to realistic GPU prices by mid Summer or Fall.

As noted above, Nvidia's policies towards manufacturers prohibits them from using their traditional "high end gaming" names on AMD GPU products. And, manufacturers have begun to comply with Nvidia's wishes (demands actually).

So, renaming top brand AMD cards has begun. This "rumor" is presumably directly from ASUS -- so has more credibility.

As noted, Nvidia has done these types of things for well over a decade. Its why I'm an AMD fan since 2003 (bought Nvidia before that). I don't expect everyone to feel like I do.

But, we do have to get used to new names for things.

NVIDIA GPP: Meet ASUS AREZ Radeon series

For now, this is just a rumor, but our information comes directly from ASUS. Apparently, ASUS will launch a new AREZ brand for Radeon series. These cards will not carry any ROG branding. In fact, they might even lose ASUS branding altogether.

The ROG series simply do not exist under AREZ brand. That said there are no AREZ ROG STRIX series, but AREZ STRIX.

Other companies such as Gigabyte and MSI have already started removing “Gaming” Radeon products from their websites... Meanwhile, MSI ‘hid’ all Radeon Gaming series from their website.

The codenames [in the chart] are real.

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Overclocked Up To 4.3 GHz (1.4V) Across All Cores in First Preview Testings – Detailed CPU Benchmarks

This chip does 4.3 GHz across all cores at 1.4V..

the chip runs at 4.35 GHz on a single core but lacks behind the Skylake CPUs in single core performance results. However, the eight cores and 16 threads help this chip deliver better MT (Multi-Threading) results..

Article

The Ryzen 7 2700X has not been officially released yet (April 16 has been said to be the date). However, they are on sale in spots.

My Ryzen 7 1800X, Ryzen 5 1600X, and Ryzen 5 2400G PCs easily overclock to the "boost" frequency on all cores all the time at stock volts. So, I was hoping Ryzen 7 2700X chips would do the same. This article seems to indicate 2700X may run at boost frequency on all cores all the time. As I've mentioned, I believe the "all core all the time" frequency is more indicative of performance than boost on one or two cores.

They indicate that the stock cooler (included in the box) keeps them cool (saving more cash for the customer).

AMD already working on “Zen 5”

We are just 10 days before Zen+ officially reaches the market, but AMD is clearly not stopping here. So far, we only knew about Zen 2 and Zen 3, both 7nm architectures. The Zen 5, which is an internal codename (subject to change) would be a fifth installment in the x86 Zen microarchitecture..

As a side note, manufacturers often skip 4 due to its meaning in Chinese culture. It’s an unlucky number because it’s homophonous to the word ‘death’. .

.. Zen 3 for 2020, Zen 5 should not be expected sooner than 2021.

7/11/2017 Update – The growing number of miners, lowering Ethereum price and increasing difficulty has lowered the amount of Ethereum that one can mine. We highly suggest looking at other currencies to remain profitable and to get your investment back! If you plan on buying a mining system today you are already way to late it appears and you might be better off using that money to buy the alt coin of your liking..

There is a site that gives pretty thorough information on the profitability of Cryptocurrency mining (including Bitcoin and Etherium). Link below.

For Bitcoin and Etherium, my analysis of the data indicated very low profit for the amount spent in hardware. I got roughly $1 per day per GPU for Etherium and far, far less for Bitcoin.

I figured I must have calculated wrong. Then, in searching, I came upon the quote above which was an update to an earlier article on cryptocurrency mining profitability -- written by an active miner. They were already concerned last November regarding profits.

I'm no expert. So, I'm hesitant saying Bitcoin and Etherium mining no longer seems worth a new investment in equipment. But, maybe it is??? If so, that could help lower GPU prices??

AMD launches Radeon RX 500X series

The new Radeon RX 500X series are meant for pre-built PCs and notebooks, they will not be available elsewhere.

That said, we are looking at identical frequencies and memory configurations as Radeon 500 non-X series.

The official AMD RX500/RX500X Page at their site seems to show identical performance (except on 550X vs 550) -- as noted in the quoted article.

Thus, the X series does not represent anything new (so far). Seems merely a rebranding (not the first rebrand ever).

An article speculates/rumors that the first 7nm Navi GPUs on the market are to be replacements for the RX580/RX570 (not RX Vega 64).

However, while selling for the lower price of an RX580, they will perform like an RX Vega 64/GTX 1080 (it is speculated).

Previous official AMD information noted that Navi was a genuine new architecture that would allow both "normal" and "very high end" GPUs. That's the point of Navi, I've read. Its "scalable" from small to very large.

Being scalable, it actually makes some sense that the first Navi would be a powerful RX580 replacement -- then, slightly after, building to a high end RX Vega replacement.

Theoretically, Navi will allow very high end GPUs that are significantly less expensive to make. We'll see what they sell for.

Navi 7nm is still speculated for 2019.

Newegg has the Ryzen 7 2700X on pre-order for $330 and Ryzen 5 2600X pre-order for $230. Release was said to be April 19.

Based on how my three Ryzen CPUs OC and based on reading unofficial data regarding overclocking the R7 2700X and R5 2600 series, I imagine many of the individual CPUs will OC to boost frequency all the cores all the time fairly easily (however, a given CPU may not). That's my speculation -- we'll see what the official post release reports say.
