AMD Ryzen 5 1600/X CPUs With 8 Working Cores Spotted In The Wild

A number of users have reported purchasing Ryzen 5 1600X & 1600 CPUs that had 8 cores active right out of the box..

The CPUs had the same 3.6GHz base clock and 4.0GHz Turbo of the 1600X, but had 8 cores and 16 threads instead of 6 and 12 respectively. Making them effectively price-cut 1800X CPUs.

Others reported the same with the cheaper Ryzen 5 1600 CPUs. All of the unlocked chips were manufactured on the 36th week of 2017 in Malaysia..

..they found that they performed exactly like 1800Xs..

It’s possible that this was a decision made simply as the result of higher demand on Ryzen 5 1600X and 1600 CPUs leading AMD to use some of its less purchased 8-core dies as Ryzen 5 1600Xs and 1600s to meet the demand..

Its a lottery. So, if one does not already own a Ryzen 5, this is not a suggestion to buy one in hopes of getting an 1800X.

Still, its interesting, to me. AMD did this with the very first Reference RX480 4GB GPUs -- they did not have enough -- so they put 8GB GPUs in the boxes and called them 4GB.

On the competition front: Intel is releasing their answer to AMD Ryzen. An article that links to dozens of Intel 8th Generation CPU reviews as they come on line.

Quote
Intel 8th Gen Core ‘Coffee Lake-S’ Review Roundup

This is a serious move from Intel, the competition in multi-core market has just begun..

Intel Coffeelake-S CPUs will only support 300 series motherboards. This means that an upgrade from Skylake or Kabylake will much more expensive. Unlike AMD, Intel did not officially confirm whether upgraded LGA1151 socket will support future CPUs, so this is something to consider before buying a new motherboard.

The list will be updated as reviews go live.

A new rumor.

For some folks, the latest Beta GPU driver from AMD (17.9.3) may disable CrossFireX.

I do not have CrossFireX on any of my several in-house computers; so, I can't verify the rumor.

An unsubstantiated rumor:

AMD’s Next Generation Navi GPU Will Be Launching in August 2018 at SIGGRAPH – Monolithic vs MCM Design Yields Explored

It will be based on the Navi GPU and fabricated on the 7nm platform. .. this would mean AMD speeding up its roll out to counter Nvidia’s increasing influence on the graphics market...

Exploring the multi-chip module die philosophy for GPUs

This one is a long way off (roughly a year from now). But, its the one I'm waiting for.

Navi is a new way to make GPUs. They tie together several smaller individual GPUs that work together like one BIG GPU (not like CrossFire or SLI -- rather like one BIG GPU). In principle, there is no limit to the shader count --- but the cost and risk are greatly reduced.

Its the same concept as Threadripper CPU which puts multiple CPUs in one package -- and they work like a single many core CPU. So, AMD has the experience to make this work.

We'll see. I expect Navi to be "late" relative to rumors and speculations because its a very new way to make a GPU and on the 7nm node. However, when it hits, Nvidia needs to have an answer ready -- rumor is, they are working on that "answer".

If you have a local Micro Center store:

Ryzen 7 1800X for $350 limit one per customer ($500 list). In store pick up only.

We have a Micro Center and I use it occasionally though its a long drive across the city. Excellent selection, good service, prices competitive. Select item on-line and its set aside at the store front ready for pick up in 18min. Easy no-hassle returns.

First priority -- letting SimHQ folks know about a cheap Ryzen. Secondarily giving Micro Center a "plug" because I think they are deserving (of course, depending on how your local store behaves, your experience may vary).

Rumor is that AMD is substantially rewriting/revising their Ryzen BIOS.

Quote
AMD preparing AGESA 1.0.0.7 update

..the upcoming AGESA 1.0.0.7 changes the entire BIOS base structure, which will make it easier to add support for Raven Ridge APUs and Pinnacle Ridge CPUs.

..we still do not have an ETA for the release of the new micro-code update but motherboard makers should have these BIOS updates ready by the time AMD officially launches desktop Raven Ridge APUs, sometime in 2018.

Pinnacle Ridge CPUs are speculated to be 6 to 9 months from now. Being the "first" update of the Ryzen design, they may bump Ryzen performance more than the customary 10 percent. We'll see.

Typically, a new AMD Ryzen-family CPU will not require a new motherboard -- just a BIOS update. AMD's stated policy is to have the current Ryzen motherboards support all new CPUs and APUs (otther than Threadripper) -- for at least a few years. That's another "bang per buck" feature of AMD's Ryzen-family.

Intel targets Nvidia [and AMD] with Nervana

..after losing the mobile market to Qualcomm it looks as if the the AI market might be lost to the graphics tsars – Nvida and AMD.

Now Intel has announced it has a its first AI chip, the Nervana Neural Network Processor..

Nervana is designed from the ground up for machine learning and you can't play games on it. Rao thinks that ditching the GPU heritage made room for optimisations like super-fast data interconnections...

Self driving cars and other "robot" devices are the future. Their "brains" need special circuits. Now the competition will be among Nvidia, AMD, Intel -- all three are developing such devices.

Competition is good smile But, while competition is good, it remains to be seen if "AI for everything" (including your job and mine) is truly going to make things better for folks.

Graphics card vendors upbeat about crytocurrency mining

..according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI), TUL, Colorful and Galaxy Microsystems have all been aggressive about the cryptocurrency opportunity since the mining trend emerged, and they have seen dramatic growths in related businesses. Asustek only started to see benefits from the segmnet in the third quarter.
..
Asustek has now estimated that the mining trend will last at least until the end of 2017...

AMD and Nvidia GPUs are used -- are in short supply and cost more because of Mining. Miners seem to prefer AMD "bang per buck". That's understandable. Mining is a business that's all about "cryptos per buck".

Original "guesstimates" said mining would be winding down this month -- and GPU prices would drop. But, not yet.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) Is Profitable Once More – Posts GAAP EPS Of 7 Cents A Share And Beats Revenue by $139 Million
..
This is absolutely fantastic news for pretty much everyone involved – including the consumer. A stronger AMD means stronger competition for Intel and NVIDIA and consequently better and cheaper products for the consumer...

Hopefully, AMD will continue to actually make money (rather than lose it as they have for years). That way, they will stay in business.

AMD "competition is good" for everyone -- even Intel and Nvidia customers smile

AMD’s 16-Core ‘Threadripper 1950X’ Gets Massive $120 Price Drop To $879 On Amazon
..
– 16 cores / 32 threads
– 3.4 GHz base and 4.0 GHz precision boost clocks
– Support for 64 PCIe lanes
– Unlocked for overclocking
...

Nice markdown so early in its lifetime. This one is for those who use multi-threaded, time-consuming applications for business (or pleasure). Its faster in multi-threaded applications and more "bang per buck" than the similarly priced Intel CPU.

Ryzen 7 1800X 8-core/16-thread does games and sometimes costs as little as $350 if one shops sales. Mine easily runs at 4GHz on all 8 cores all the time.

AMD Ryzen notebooks to arrive in coming weeks

Acer, HP and Lenovo volume in Q1 2018

The market in 2018 will not be an easy win for AMD. Intel is upping its game..

AMD will definitely have the price performance ratio on its side..

Bear in mind that Vega based graphics will seriously challenge Intel’s UHD Graphics 620 graphics. Vega is simply better for gaming than anything Intel ever designed, there is no argument there...

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD 12.33 -13.47%) stock dips as investors sell off after 307% increase in GAAP earnings but lowered Q4 guidance and weak data centre growth

AMD stock has historically undergone seasonality based revenue decline in Q4 but since this news comes immediately after new products were introduced to the market (Threadripper and Vega) and in the wake of slowing crypto-powered sales the market has reacted negatively to the announcement. ..

After flying "sky high", AMD stocks are leveling off or descending -- normal behavior at this time of year. But, it bears watching. To make money with any stock, one must sell at the correct time -- sell at the peak, then re-buy at the new valley (for some stocks)..

AMD Launches 15W Ryzen 7 2700U And Ryzen 5 2500U APUs With Radeon Vega Graphics And Some Absolutely Incredible Performance Numbers

..15W Ryzen APU.. can outperform a 91W Intel Core i5-7600k ..

I am cautious in saying this, but I think AMD might actually have the perfect must-have chip of this generation in mobile. There are sure to sell like hotcakes in the laptop market...
..
The AMD Ryzen 7 2700U is the fastest processor for ultrathin notebooks, with up to 44% more multi-threaded CPU performance as well as up to 161% more graphics performance than the competition..

In the coming weeks, initial systems powered by Ryzen mobile processors are slated to be available from top manufacturers including Acer, HP, and Lenovo, with further platform updates expected from Dell, Asus and other OEMs in early 2018...

The above article was based on AMD provided information (not independent review of actual notebook computers). But, something to look forward to for ultrathin notebook users who want computational power and play games.

AMD stock price wobbles after downgrade

Analysts at Morgan Stanley think that the stock price of AMD is too high and have issued a warning that it could fall as far as $8 per share.

The stock price closed at $11.84 last Friday..

..[Morgan Stanley] believes that cryptocurrency trading isn’t going to continue to boost sales of its graphics cards but that’s a bit bizarre because, for example, bitcoin continues to rise and rise, prompting increased rather than less speculation...

The author of the above article did not totally agree with the Morgan Stanley prognostication. On the other hand, most stocks that rapidly rise to new heights eventually fall back down partway -- including AMD, probably, eventually.

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX Vega 56 DirectX 12 100420L $399.99 at Newegg today

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX VEGA 64 DirectX 12 100410L $499.99 at Newegg

These are "Reference" model cards. The interesting thing (to me) is that they are selling for "list price" -- first time I've noticed an RX Vega not marked up because of bitcoin mining.

Hopefully, Black Friday will bring actual discounts from list price.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Ti reviews are finally in

Geforce GTX 1070 Ti .. fits nicely between the GTX 1070 and Geforce GTX 1080, and even outperforms AMD's Radeon RX Vega 56 in most scenarios. This does not apply to the games where RX Vega series graphics cards perform quite well, including the recently launched Forza Motorsport 7 and Destiny 2, where even the Radeon RX Vega 56, outperforms the GTX 1080, at both its targeted 1440p resolution and even 4K/UHD gaming...

GTX 1070 Ti (reference edition available $450 list) and AMD RX Vega 56 (reference edition available $400 list). At $500 (available) the Reference RX Vega 64 ahead of the GTX 1070 Ti in tests I've read.

But, they are all close together in performance. People probably could not tell the difference in a "blind test" (as was shown by a blind test conducted a few months ago between Vega 64 and GTX 1080).

Comes down to price and brand name preferences.

Competition is good smile

Rumors of the unthinkable silicon collaboration between Intel and AMD are true, as Intel announced its first multi-chip module (MCM), which combines a 14 nm Core "Coffee Lake-H" CPU die, with a specialized 14 nm GPU die by AMD, based on the "Vega" architecture...

I'll be interested to see how this competes with AMD APUs. AMD's APU advantage was excellent graphics (compared to Intel CPUs with their mediocre internal graphics).

Part of the rumor (from a while back) was that Intel had been trying to partner with Nvidia. However, that was rumored to be "not working out for Intel".

It begins. Some high end new-games will require 8 and more threads -- now that AMD and Intel supply that many.

Tested: Assassin’s Creed Origins requires a CPU with 8 Threads for Full Performance

The 16 thread requirement (for best performance) is just around the corner (a couple years) for a few (not all) highest end games. In my opinion, of course smile

Also, in reading about how Assassin's Creed "overworks" CPUs -- due to high end in-game-environments (according to the developer its not DRM as sometimes reported), its worth noting that those high advertised CPU "boost" frequencies are only for temporary use on a couple threads. If you need to play a whole game at maximum performance -- and it's many threaded -- look at a CPUs "base" frequency (not "boost" frequency). Notably, base frequencies are often much less than boost frequencies. Of course, SimHQ veteran overclockers have this covered -- they make sure their CPU is well cooled for prolonged use at OC and "boost" frequencies.
