When I first played this game it frustrated and confused the hell out of me, not that it takes much to do either, but once I got to grips with the UI and began to make sense of the way things work it got right under my skin and it has since become my favourite strategy game.
What amazes me is just how much attention to detail there is, how beautifully realised the world is, the vehicles are modelled with so much love, the maps are so atmospheric and vast, the AI is challenging in the right ways. It isn't perfect but you need to bear in mind this game is made by just a handful of guys, there's no budget to speak of, no marketing strategy, no junior coders to do the leg work, just a few fellas with sacks full of passion, energy and pride in their project.
The sheer size of the maps, the number of different and accurately represented units, the way they have created a game that allows you to control large scale operations spread out over several separate engagements. The way the AI isn't scripted so no matter how many times you play a campaign or even an individual battle it'll never play out the same way twice.
It's an astonishing achievement. The words 'genre defining' are often over used, and it could well be argued that this game sits in a genre all of its own, whatever, I believe this game has raised the bar for this type of game to a whole new level. the mind boggles at what this developer could do with a triple A budget!
If you haven't tried this game and you love war games then you need to get the free demo (link at the top of this forums page) and give it a go, trust me, your current understanding of what a strategy game can be will be utterly blown apart.
And what's more, there's a bleedin' sequel in the works.
Here's a video that showcases some of the best elements of the games simulated battlefield, it's a love letter to this extraordinary little game. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.
