Hi,

After a bot of advice. I have always had Xbox historically, both the original and 360 and never really saw the fuss in Playstation. My old 360 is dying slowly and I am at a point where I need to decide whether to go with XB1 or change to PS. I do not play the console that often and when I do, multiplayer is not really a must. I have bluray so that is not a consideration for me. Cost is not an issue.

What is everyones opinion of the consoles? I have heard that for pure gaming the PS4 is the better choice but for a more rounded multimedia experience the Xbox is the better choice? I like racing and GT6 looks lovely but then so does the latest incarnation of Forza.

So in summary I am a casual gamer and just want the best experience generally? Thanks for any advice....

Ross

Both have blu ray,

Xb1 is more multi-tasking oriented,

Ps4 has more GPU power (tbh its a smidge), and significantly faster memory.

They both run a similar APU so they should be about the same, as mentioned the Ps4 APU Has more Shaders on die over Xb1,

Both consoles stiff previous hardware owners, Fanatec and Logi wheel owners get the shaft.

GT5 and 6 (5.5 lol) are both on PS3.

Forza, as GT5/6 Still have old 3d models and vacuum cleaner engine sounds.

FM1,2 were good, Forza 3 felt rushed, Fm4 is by far the best.

Fm5 on XBO felt very rushed.

I started using consoles again with the original XBOX (previously only owned a SNES and Megadrive) I then went with the 360 but later also bought a PS3 (my first Playstation) This time around I decided to go with one console and weighed up the pro's and con's of each system and went with the PS4 despite being more of an XBOX guy.

The PS4's hardware is a little more powerful and it's shown in the last year with the XBOX One struggling to produce native 1080p output. Despite the recent articles about the API and ESRAM I don't see the XBOX One improving much and even if it does the PS4 is not set in stone and will also improve. I really like the PS4 controller too, I thought the 360 pad was good but Sony hasn't just produced more of the same like Microsoft did they enhanced the ergonomics and added a small speaker, light bar (for use with the camera) and a clickable touchpad which can be used in some games like Killzone where you give commands to your droid companion. The system itself is a really neat design, smaller than the XBOX ONE yet still keeping everything inside the console including the power supply. The big thing for me is Sony has invested in its first party studios where as Microsoft has closed or sold off many of theirs and instead throw money at timed exclusives etc. they still have some good first party studios and titles but in my opinion Sony has the better stable of first party studios and exclusive titles.

XBOX Live was always the better online system in my opinion but I think Sony has learnt from their first real online attempt with the PS3 (not really counting the PS2 adaptor) Playstation has those features that made XBL stand out like the party system and despite now charging for PSN (when previously it was free) they add value to that subscription with the instant game library which in my opinion is more generous than Microsoft ever were with their free game offers which they introduced in answer to Sony's system. They have also run some good online sales too, I just feel Sony have tried harder to justify the subscription charge.

In my opinion the PS4 was designed for gaming while also retaining some good multimedia features where as Microsoft wanted the XBOX One to be a multimedia device that lost some of its gaming prowess. If you play online then go with what your friends own, if you play mainly offline then I think the PS4 has the better hardware and the better line up of first party studios and exclusives and generally third party games have run better at higher resolutions (Call of Duty Ghosts, Battlefield 4 etc) on the PS4.

You like racing so I would say Xbox One. As mentioned before GT is on PS3. Forza 5 is decent, It might not have near as many cars as GT but all the cars interiors are modeled. Also Forza Horizons 2 is an excellent addition to the Forza series.

I got an Xbox in September and my reasoning was I dont like the PlayStation controller, I cant get comfortable with the thumb sticks. The Xbox controller has better thumb stick positions in my opinion. And my second reason was security, PlayStation seems to get hacked and stay down for awhile. Those were my reasons behind my purchase.

You honestly can not go wrong with either one.

Thanks for your help everyone. Not fully decided yet but will probably try the PS4 as fancy a change.

Keep in mind the issues Sony has with its network integrity as well. One of the things that annoys the hell out of me is that when Sony does network upgrades it takes the ENTIRE network down during UK hours (obviously to protect the US market as those down times would be during silly o'clock while America sleeps). It also annoys the hell out of me as there appears to be no network resilience, hence why the entire network has to be taken down...and dont even get me started on deliberate network sabotage!

While this is really only a minor point, if you do eventually end up playing online you can't get on while the network is down...and with some games you can't even start them up without internet connectivity!

Not sure if the same problem exists for Xbox but just something to keep in the back of your mind.

As a user of both PSN and XBL for the last couple of years, XBL used to be much better in the previous generations compared to Sony's free service, but in the current Gen last few months, XBL has been down a lot too for network problems and DDOS attacks...

Since both Sony and Microsoft charge us fees for the online service now, they need to start treating these services similar to other paid services like cable or telephone, have some redundancy to handle issues and maintenance without downtime, and spend money on DDOS attack mitigation technology the same way big ecommerce and bank sites do.

The outage impact was bad enough for people who got PS4s and XB1s on Christmas day and weren't able to install and play with their new consoles due to the PSN and XBL outages, but just imagine if Microsoft would have gone ahead with their always online DRM...
