GPL, EAW, Falcon 4. It says a lot that these games are all alive and well, almost 17 years after they came out. Wonder how many will be playing Call of Duty in 17 years' time.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

The best year for flight sims? The answer would vary depending on your vintage of course. For me it would be much earlier, probably about '92-'93.On my day off, which was a Monday I would go into town and visit EVERY outlet that sold PC games. There were a couple that I would visit most days in my lunch hour too. The visits would get more frequent just before a much anticipated release (usually a Microprose game). Kid in a sweet shop? You bet

Looking up the date I found Damon Slye tried to do a kickstarter for Red Baron with Mad Otter Games. It was canceled because of a poor response. Never knew they tried.
That's a shame. I had no idea about that kickstarter either. It looks like Rise of Flight and OFF will be IT as far as PC WWI flight sims go for a very long time.

A strong yearning for nostalgia creates an inherent bias in articles like that. I think there is more to it then that Panzer. Before 98games didn't have very good graphics so they relied on good story telling and immersion to suck the player in. In 98 we saw a pretty good leap in graphics with Voodoo cards and 3D boards in general. So for a brief periodwe had both. They still had the ideology of immersion and they were really starting to suck you in with graphics too. I would say that's true for 98,99 and some of 2000. After thatthe focus was more about graphicsand then more graphics, graphics, graphics and graphicsoh yeahdon't forget the eye candy. Zero immersionis the rule of the day now.

Don't forget the Windows 98 update for Tie Fighter and X-Wing that came out in 1998.

There were a couple that I would visit most days in my lunch hour too. The visits would get more frequent just before a much anticipated release (usually a Microprose game). Kid in a sweet shop? You bet I'd have to agree. Falcon 4.0 was a great sim, but not groundbreaking in the way that Falcon 3.0 was. When you look at what else had come along in the 6 years or so between 3.0 and 4.0 - F15 Strike Eagle III, Flanker, EF2000, Tornado, Back to Baghdad, etc - then Falcon 4.0 really wasn't anything but the predictable next step in the evolution. All it really had that the others didn't was the dynamic campaign. Graphics were great, but so were the others' for the technology of the time. Before Falcon 3.0 most sims were either nothing more than arcade games or jerky wire-framed versions that reminded you of how Gumby moved. After Falcon 4.0 there seemed to be only arcade games and sims that emphasized switchology and memorizing countless EM curves as a substitute for actual gameplay. Sometimes you don't want to have to be up at 0300 for the mission brief when you don't take off till 1000. The years between were the golden years of flight sims, IMO.

>>>OFF is dead (not really in fact), long live WOFF! And about the ill-fated RB kickstarter: <<< and ROF Ugh!, what an idiot, Unless somebody over there can figure out why the original RB2/3D lasts in the fond memories of the old customers, there is no hope.

Article I agree. 1998 was the best year to be a flight sim fan...that's for sure. They don't mention any flight sims in the article however. +1 for 98 the year M1A2 by micropose was released. Think steel beast was released in 1999. For armour fans both releases were a benchmark.
