Saw a guy selling this on Facebook last night, haggled for half of what he was asking and a few redundant hand tools I had here. Picked it up a few hours ago and just got done giving it a bit of a cleaning & lube. No. 4 Mk 1 Lee-Enfield, s/n 453xxx, with Williams rear peep sight and Savage 4x scope. Sporterized by Santa Fe Division of Golden State Arms. Bright & sharp bore, #2 bolt head so headspace isn't maxed out, the barrel is 22" so I think a couple inches were cut off. I'm taking it to my gunsmith tomorrow or Wednesday to have headspace & other safety issues checked, and to have the scope bore sighted because it seems canted just a little bit. I'll also have him Loctite the scope mount screws while it's there.

Not bad looking at all. I don't generally care for sporterized military surplus rifles but that one looks good. This is what an unaltered one looks like with the exception of the rear sight.

I've actually owned a No. 4 Mk 1 and Mk 2 (with the beautiful brass buttplate) before, and thought they were rather kittenish as far as recoil. It definitely didn't kick more than my M1A, which did more to my cheek (via my thumb over the top of the stock) than it ever did to my shoulder. I may just have to join a rod & gun club around here for the range, because it seems all the sand pits we used to shoot at are off limits now. Mine has an aftermarket mag that I hope works well. There's not a lot to them so I imagine it'll be trouble-free, and maybe original mags are pretty easy to come by.
I'm usually not a fan of sporterized military rifles either, mainly necause most of them that I've seen kept the military barrels in a sloppily cut-down stock. This one at least has a new barrel on it, and the rear sight & clip guide were removed to give it a cleaner profile. I'd like to pick up an unaltered one someday, too.
I'm probably going to take it hunting next year, something in the 180-grain range should be capable of putting anything found on the North American continent on the ground with all 4 feet in the air. It's probably not the best choice for a charging grizzly, though!

Looks like a great hunting rifle! Is it in original caliber, .303?

Yes, it's still chambered for .303 British. I've been told that the Mk 7 round is effective for hunting because its rearward center of gravity causes it to yaw severely on impact, but I'm not comfortable using an FMJ bullet to hunt. It's probably illegal anyway, many places outlaw FMJ for hunting because of the relatively clean wound profile.

Privi Partizan makes some good .303 ammo. Not very expensive ether. Cabala's usually has it. I don't know about Howell's

Howell's? You must be right in my area. My go-to guy is usually Gulf of Maine Gunsmithing in Raymond. Never been to Howell's.

I already miss the old days when you could get the 768-round cases of surplus stuff for short money, but that ship sailed a long, long time ago. I'll have to see what people are using to hunt with. I got a box of 180-grain Remington Core-Lokt with it and I don't see why that wouldn't work just fine.

Many Canadians have .303's, and as the ammo has dried up in the last 15 years, there is little replacing it. Except that Privi Partizan has stepped up to the plate, amd it is good. They have gained a good reputation among Canadian .303 shooters as making quality reliable ammo that is accurate for normal needs, and performs quite well for hunting. As a bonus, their brass casings are quality and great for reloaders... important for .303 shooters nowdays. If you reload, don't buy .30cal bullets for it, these are .310 caliber, just like Soviet rifles.
