My sister lost her war against cancer today.
She fought many battles over the past 5 years.

I'm glad that I talked with her 6 days ago, when she entered hospice.
Her mind was clear then.

I'm her big brother, I protected her, and she at times hated that...when we were teens.
There was nothing I could do to protect her in this war against cancer. She fought battles and sacrificed body parts.

She went to college and married a great guy, they have 3 kids. Senior in high school down to 4th grade.
She never smoked, seldom drank.

I don't get how cancer picks a target.

Add mine to that. I had my own brush with the 'Big C'.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

MudWasp;

My thoughts are with you. I have 3 relatives with cancer in various stages. One with colon cancer and two with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, so I know where of you speak. This cancer is epidemic in proportion with 1 in 3 people likely to get it in their life time. We haven't made all that much progress in dealing with it given the monetary resources committed to a cure. We can only hope!

Best Regards mate!

My deepest condolences MudWasp. She may have hated that you protected her when you guys were teenagers, but deep down she knew it was because you loved her. You can be sure that she was eternally grateful for that love, especially these last five years. We cannot know when or how someone we care for will be taken from us. All we can do is let them know how much we love them while they are here. It sounds like you did that amazingly well.

Again, my deepest condolences on your families loss sir.

My deepest condolences, MudWasp.

There's no good time to lose someone close but near a holiday is especially bad. My father passed away on July 5th, 1990, my mother-in-law between mine and my wife's birthdays (only 12 days apart) and then my wife succumbed to various health issues, cancer being one, on Valentine's Day nearly four years ago.

I'm sure she didn't hate you, MudWasp. Rather it was the feeling that she needed your help.

When I get to missing my wife really badly I make a point of thanking God for the 21 years together He gave us.

SALUTE TO ALL!

Some things make it more likely, but there is always a small chance. It's random bad luck of the worst kind.
My sister is happily still alive, but I have lost friends and loved ones in the same way.

It's really heart-breaking, I know. Try to focus on remembering the good times. That's hard to do sometimes, but which memory would you rather associate her with?

I'm very sorry to hear that. All the best to you and your family!

A few years ago my aunt died of lung cancer. There are cancer cases in practically every family. Considerable progress has been made in treatment methods, but unfortunately too many cases still end badly.

My deepest condolences.

Cancer is hard on the patient and even harder on the loved ones. While life styles, genetics, and contact with certain substances can increase the possibility of cancer, the biggest impact on the chances of getting cancer is luck. I've been through cancer and have seen the effects on my loved ones.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

MudWasp,

I join the others in prayers for you and your family. It's a terrible thing to watch a loves one taken by this hellish disease, especially your "little sister." God help her family, her kids; I had a friend who lost his .daughter-in-law in very similar circumstances, young children in in school, early 40's, and we all ask the same question, why, in her prime like that? And at Christmas?

We join you in your grief in what poor measure we can.
