On my last two campaign missions my flight leader took off, climbed to about 500ft and then leveled off, dove, and then flew about 50t off the ground in a continuous circuit. As if we were in the typical spiral climb at the start of most missions to gain altitude however he just stays at 50ft perpetually. In both circumstances I followed for about 15 minutes before breaking off and landing to start a new mission.
Is this a case of engine failure for the flight lead? It didn't seem that way as he was able to maintain a fairly high speed just simply wouldn't climb. The rest of the flight simply followed around and around and around slightly behind and above.
I think next mission I'll bite the bullet and follow this event to its finality just to see what happens. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a known issue? Just curious. Thanks. smile

High over the Front
FWIW I have never seen that type of behavior.
In case of engine failure (or what I presume to be engine failure since the AI ain't talking) the AI lands at the nearest friendly aerodrome.

I've been involved with flights staying a couple hundred feet over the ground and never climbing, just flying around in large circles at low altitude for no apparent reason. Been a few patches ago, though.

It might be worth saying what squadron you were flying, what the mission was and the date in case anyone else runs into it.

Hey, I ran into this with Jasta 80b Sept 11 1918.
I was not flight leader. A flight and b flight both flew very low together, circling for more than 35 minutes, a short distance from our airfield.

I have had something similar happen with RNAS where the flight leader goes down to about 50 ft AGL the rest of flight is at abou 400 ft AGL. Then he comes back up and all is good from there on. When this happens try going to next waypoint. That has worked for me.

Never seen that. Sailors advice to force travel to the next waypoint (using shift+w) is also what I would try in that situation

I found that the leader staying at 500ft was caused by using the 'next waypoint'. In my next sortie we climbed to 7 000' before crossing the lines. So I avoid shift+w nowadays. Crossing the lines at 500' is suicide.

We are aware of it, but no fix coming presently as the workaround is simply for the player to avoid shift+w to change way points whilst forming up. Also you can choose air start instead if you'd rather not fly the climb out.
