Actually changing the complier and complier options can make a massive difference, what was state of the art 8 years ago is rubbish now, when you have a world filled with much faster and more powerful multi core chips, better graphics cards etc. I bought it myself a couple of days ago at the bargain price As I said, most the libraries they're compiling against are what the original product was built with years ago. So for all the compiler is slightly better optimised, the underlying code hasn't really been moved on. Code doesn't magically become optimised for multi-processor/core architecture just because of a compiler switch and FSX just wasn't written for multi-core (and is also one that's very much CPU limited rather than GPU). So yes, you'd expect some difference but not a huge one. And in terms of objective tests to date then there hasn't been any huge difference proven.

just want to clarify,
Microsoft's ESP for FSX has 2 branches, PRO and Consumer.
Lockheed owns the PRO branch, Dovetail now owns the Consumer.
They are free to do what they will with it, which includes replacing the Primary rendering engine with DX11 if they wish.

They are free to do what they will with it, which includes replacing the Primary rendering engine with DX11 if they wish. This is not entirely correct. There is no such thing as Microsoft ESP for FSX. ESP and FSX are almost the same product for different markets. Before Aces shutdown Microsoft was working on the Flight Simulator series for entertainment market. There was a need for the same simulation for the professional market though - that's why Microsoft made Microsoft ESP. It was basically FSX with different licensing scheme and removed the gamelike GUI. From now Microsoft was working on four products. Microsoft Flight Next (next version of FSX - sim for entertainment market), Microsoft ESP (pro-sim), Microsoft Train Simulator 2 and Microsoft Core (the engine that run all above). With the Aces closure, MSFS-Next and MS Train Sim 2 has been cancelled. ESP was still supported, but no longer in development. MS Flight is not a part of the story, but it's based on the improved engine, but with most of the features cut off. We all know it had a potential, but it was shut down before it could take off. Sorry for pity pun. This is where the LM comes in. Lockheed Martin bought a license to use the source code and make a professional product based on the engine. This is Prepar3D 1 and 2. Prepar3D is a successor to the Microsoft ESP. Dovetail also bought a license to use the source code for their own upcoming titles and to rerelease FSX on Steam with some minor fixes. This is what we have now. What will happen in future we don't know. Maybe Dovetail will improve the FSX even more, maybe they will switch the development to their own sim. Dovetail makes products for the entertainment market.

Go over to Avsim's front page. They just posted an interview with Dovetail's Chief Tech. guy dealing with FSX SE. Apparently, there are limits to what they can do with the core of the game. Quote " We can make (and have made) changes to the core software, but we are not at liberty to make significant functionality improvements that rightly would belong in a sequel." Sequel? Wait, what? I'm confused. It sounds like either: 1. They can actually make changes to the core code, and add functionality, but are reserving this for a new product line. -or- 2. They can't make functionality changes because that would constitute a sequel, which they don't have the rights to do? I'm hoping it's the first, not the latter. I'm perfectly fine with paying for a sequel if it has increased functionality, and can bring better performance to the table. Plus, as P3D has shown, the engine can be modernized (eg, DX 11 Support and better GPU allocation) without completely derailing the aftermarket eco-system.

Dovetail have the rights to release FSX through Steam as they already have and develop an in house sim using the FS technology. Check out the original Dovetail MSFS announcement for the licensing details.
thanks Lewis Ah, thanks for the clarification Lewis. So my money is on FS2017 being the next in the series

How does one get TrackIR to work in Steam Edition? Also by default the default virtual cockpit view is really zoomed in.
I know this is an older game, but I have all my sliders cranked and it still looks like ass stock...never been an add on guy may have to get REX right?
Also my CH Rudder Pedal Toe Brakes are SUPER sensitive, even with tons of dampening and curve applied in the FSX settings, any tips so my brakes aren't on while taking off at the slightest touch?
